Dummies in Space

The End of All Things by John Scalzi

May 6, 2023 by Halbs 6 Comments

It’s been more than a decade since I first read Old Man’s War. While I have enjoyed every book in the Old Man’s War series leading up to this aptly-named ultimate novel, I have been hesitant to start this one. The reason? The series is too good! I just didn’t want to have it end. After all, I did just recently finish up reading The Expanse series. A guy can only take so many sci-fi series endings at once! But, as they say, all good […]

“From the top of the large boulder he sat on, Ensign Tom Davis looked across the expanse of the cave toward Captain Lucius Abernathy, Science Office Q’eeng and Chief Engineer Paul West perched on a second, larger boulder and thought, Well, this sucks” Well this sucks. I reread this book. I first read it in 2013 or so, close to when it came out. I can’t pinpoint it, but I know it was close because and when and where I was in my life. I […]

“You want pi million dollars,” “Yes,” I said. “Why pi?” “It’s a nice round number.” “It’s literally not.”

The Dispatcher: Travel by Bullet by John Scalzi

I’ve listened to Zachery Quinto read all three of John Scalzi’s Dispatcher novellas, and I liked them. I think Quinto does a great job with Tony Valdez’ voice and Scalzi’s sensibilities and humor really shine in this noir-ish, fantasy-ish, sci-fi-ish series. Tony Valdez lives in a world a lot like ours, except if you murder someone, most of the time, they’ll reappear somewhere safe – naked and alive. People still die of natural causes, by suicide, and in accidents. But they don’t die by murder. […]

Take Me. I Am a Scientist. I Also Lift Things

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

October 28, 2022 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

This book was a bit of lighthearted fun. It was also a novel with fingerprints of the pandemic all over it. Like many others, Jamie Bell’s life was turned upside down by Covid-19. Dropped from their position as a marketing executive by a local start up, they finds themselves working as a delivery driver while trying to keep their flat-mates afloat. All this changes though with a chance run in with an old classmate named Tom. Tom works for an “animal rights organization” and his […]

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

Travel by Bullet by John Scalzi

The Android’s Dream – 3/5 This is an early Scalzi, and it’s one of his, sigh, funny books. Sometimes I really like John Scalzi and sometimes I think he’s so annoying. This book is a pretty funny science fiction in general but he still Scalzis all over it. We begin with a secretive meeting between someone who is mentioned as some kind of diplomat getting a piece of experimental technology grafted onto (into) his body. He says he is going to try to fart his […]

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

CBR14BINGO: Monster Square (Kaiju=monster for the most part but a handful of monstrous people involved as well. This would have never been something that I would have picked up but when Cannonballers recommend, you listen. Perhaps I should have used the Rec’d square for this one, but Monster is too perfect.) A recently downsized tech worker, Jamie, starts delivering app-ordered food during the Covid pandemic. When the delivery is to someone that Jamie talked to once a party in college, a whole new world literally opens […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
