“Don’t swim with the dolphins during a labor dispute. No matter how much they try to convince you otherwise.”

Starter Villain by John Scalzi

September 7, 2023 by Emmalita 5 Comments

I really enjoyed Starter Villain, and then I put it aside for a couple of weeks (*cough*months*cough*) because I had other reviews that need to be written sooner, and when I came back to write this review, I had a warm fuzzy feeling, but nothing of substance to say. That’s not the worst thing I can say about a book – that all I remember is a good feeling. So I reread Starter Villain, and that was not a chore. I enjoyed it again, though I […]

Watch This Space #3: Electric Space Boogaloo

The Last Emperox by John Scalzi

August 31, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

The Last Emperox completes The Interdependency trilogy – a sprawling space opera that examines the political and scientific ramifications when the ‘flow stream’ that connects the various hubs of humanity across the universe start to fail. Book 1 introduced us to the fledgling Emperox Grayland II of the noble Wu family, who has the misfortune of taking the title over right as The Interdependency begins to unravel. We also met: the flow scientist, Marce, who comes bearing the bad news about the collapsing flow stream; […]

Watch This Space #2: Now with more space!

The Consuming Fire by John Scalzi

August 16, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

My review of this first novel in the The Interdependency Trilogy can be read here: https://cannonballread.com/2023/07/the-collapsing-empire-caesars-wife/. I continued to engage with Book 2 via Wil Wheaton’s incredible narration. He did an excellent job, again. So, we pick up in Book 2 where we left off. The nefarious Nohamapetan family is attempting to recover from its botched attempted coup; the fledgling Emperox Grayland II is scrambling to convince her parliament of the impending collapse of the Flow, the method of interplanetary travel; and Lord Marce, the […]

Smashy Smash

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

August 8, 2023 by Debcapsfan 1 Comment

CBR Bingo- Strange Worlds I am glad to see a bunch of folks reading The Kaiju Preservation Society because it was great fun. Very much like his Redshirts novel where a merry band of misfits exist and wackiness ensues. It’s not completely low stakes, and it had enough tension that I almost worried a little for our misfits. These misfits are smart scientists, except for the main character, Jamie. Jamie lifts things. Jamie is pretty non descript. Most of the characters are not described in […]

The Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi

July 24, 2023 by Caesar's Wife 2 Comments

The first question in my mind when I finished listening to Wil Wheaton’s excellent narration of The Collapsing Empire was “this had better be a god damned trilogy!”. Thankfully, it is, and I will get to spend many more hours listening to the plight of the young Emperox Grayland II as she navigates the untimely collapse of The Flow, the method by which humans of the future overcome the limitations of light speed travel. The Collapsing Empire opens with a prologue that sets the scene […]

CBR15 Bingo: Strange Worlds

The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi

July 18, 2023 by Malin 1 Comment

CBR15 Bingo: Strange Worlds 15-word-review: Delivering food during the pandemic leads Jamie Gray to a monstrously exciting new career opportunity. Longer review: During the Covid-19 pandemic, Jamie Gray is working a dead-end job as a delivery driver for the very same company he got fired from. One day, when delivering food, Jamie runs into an old acquaintance, Tom, who remembers that Jamie’s thesis was on science-fiction and therefore thinks the job opportunity that KPS, the “animal rights organisation” that Tom works for might be a […]

I was agog after reading that sentence. Could not read on for five minutes. I mean, wtf.

“Skin covered finger bones”—that’s hilarious. This was a very satisfying review.
