By the Book

By the Book by Jasmine Guillory

March 21, 2022 by Classic 6 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review.  So, here’s the thing. I loved Beauty and the Beast. I was fascinated by that movie when it first came out (the cartoon one not that horrible live action one) and felt like holy cow there’s a Disney Princess just like me. I would rather be reading and I would daydream for hours about traveling and leaving my little town. I even had my very own Gaston who […]

Past, Present, and Future in Romance

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory

Naked in Death by J.D. Robb

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James

September 22, 2021 by Leslie Leave a Comment

A key feature of romance is the obstacle–what keeps the main characters apart. I’m finding it interesting looking at how this convention gets translated into different plots and time periods. Often it’s class difference or political rivalries, or sometimes it is a misunderstanding or a bad first impression. Eloisa James in A Kiss at Midnight uses the Cinderella story as her foundation, but she modernizes the narrative so that the reasons keeping her Cinderella (here, Kate Daltry) and Prince (Gabriel, Prince of Warl-Marburg-Baalsfeld) apart are more complex […]

Love was the last thing on their minds

Destiny's Captive by Beverly Jenkins

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon

December 21, 2020 by teresaelectro 6 Comments

Romance has been a great salve for the general pandemic malaise. I’ve been loving own voices books featuring Black protagonists finding love, even when it was absolutely the last thing on their minds. These three novels all written by Black women were refreshing and reminded me why I love this genre. I absolutely love reading about an independent woman who falls in love with a sexy man who has his act together. I picked up Destiny’s Captive by Beverly Jenkins from the library. I had […]

I liked this a lot better than her last book, but Jasmine Guillory and I might be about to part ways.

Party of Two (The Wedding Date, #5) by Jasmine Guillory

August 27, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

NB: I received a free copy of the ARC from Netgalley and Berkeley, but that has not affected the content of my review. This was a perfectly fine romance. Certainly it was leaps and bounds better than her last book, which felt rushed and forced. But Party of Two was missing the spark for me that her earlier stuff had, particularly the second book in this series, The Proposal, which is my favorite of hers. Our two main characters, Olivia and Max, are very cute […]

A Light and Easy Proposal

The Proposal by Jasmine Guillory

February 5, 2020 by jillster85 6 Comments

Nikole Paterson is attending a Dodgers game with her 5-month boyfriend, when he proposes via Jumbotron. He spells her name wrong, he’s kind of an idiot, she’s basically just been sleeping with him because he’s hot, and she says no in front of the stadium. He storms off, and the media starts to descend, until she is rescued by Carlos and his sister Angela, who take her to meet up with her two best friends so they can drink and have pizza. Carlos is a […]

The novel equivalents of Hallmark movies

The Lost Husband by Katherine Center

Royal Holiday (The Wedding Date #4) by Jasmine Guillory

January 29, 2020 by badkittyuno Leave a Comment

(3 stars) The Lost Husband by Katherine Center It’s not set at Christmas time, but that’s pretty close. Goats instead of dogs, though. “Anything was possible. Everything was uncertain. But I knew one thing for sure: I’d bounced back before, and I would do it again and again and again. Because that’s the only choice there is. And as many things as I still had to lose, I had just as many more left to find.” Libby and her two small children have been living […]
