Female memoirs about growing up in California and then moving to New York written by actresses!

Where Am I Now? True Stories of Girlhood and Accidental Fame by Mara Wilson

The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl by Issa Rae

May 11, 2019 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

Where Am I Now? 3.5 Stars I enjoyed Where Am I Now? back in CBR8 and decided to revisit it this year as an audio-book. Mara Wilson narrates her memoir which threw me off because the Mara Wilson of 2016 does not sound like I imagined. It’s not like I was  expecting her to still have her 1993 lisp but it was still jarring to my auditory system. Most people have embarrassing videos of themselves as children. Few have theirs copyrighted by Twentieth Century Fox. Wilson’s […]

2018 – I Can’t Quit You

January 1, 2019 by Jenny S 1 Comment

This last year, like many Cannonballers, I read more books than I got a chance to review and so this final review of 2018, which will end up being my first review of 2019, is a sort of odds and ends.  Here in no particular order are books that I read while in China, books I read while on vacation in Northern Wisconsin, and books I read during my fall and spring semesters that I just didn’t have time to write about at the time. […]

“I needed to see more from my movies than the extremely tragic black woman, or the magic helpless Negro, or the many black men in dresses.”

Okay so I had no idea who Issa Rae was before starting this book, but I saw it on Overdrive as part of the Women’s History Month collection and absolutely loved the cover, so here we are! I’m glad I picked it up because it was really funny and well written and I’m glad to know who she is now. “Girls, New Girl, 2 Broke Girls. What do they all have in common? The universal gender classification, “girl,” is white. In all three of these […]

I Don’t Remember Much About It

December 25, 2016 by ASKReviews Leave a Comment

(This is a review of the audio version) I think I would have enjoyed this better in written form, because I had a hard time following along and staying interested to the audio version. Essays especially I think lend themselves well to paper (or electronic) versions because they can be read in chunks; the audio version for me meant stopping it a lot right in the middle, and not being able to listen again until I’d forgotten what I already heard. That said, what I […]
