Sex, Drugs and Music With Rocks In.

May 6, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

“He had the feeling, once again, that he’d missed out on something somewhere. He’d never really realized it until the last couple of days. He didn’t know what it was. He just wanted to do things. He didn’t know what they were. But he wanted to do them soon.” “There are millions of chords. There are millions of numbers. And everyone forgets the one that is a zero. But without the zero, numbers are just arithmetic. Without the empty chord, music is just noise.” It […]

The honeymoon is over.

May 5, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

Shit, as they say, is getting real. Sex Criminals, Vol. 1 remains one of the funniest, sexiest, most ridiculous things I’ve ever read. That it’s a comic is only a plus. It would have been funny and sexy and touching if it was just words, but Suzie and Jon and their friends really come to life in the colorful, sometimes profane, artwork. (There are also some truly hilarious visual gags as well.) But if One Weird Trick was all about introducing Suzie and Jon and […]

DID YOU LEAVE BECAUSE OF MY ATTIC WIFE IS THAT WHAT THIS IS ABOUT

May 5, 2015 by narfna 12 Comments

If you’re ever having a bad day, you could do worse than self-medicating with maybe a hot bath or some hot cocoa or ice cream or soft pajamas or episodes of Gilmore Girls, but maybe also think about adding Texts From Jane Eyre in there as well. There were parts of this book that made me laugh until tears squeezed out of my eyeholes. There were also other parts, mostly to do with classics and mythology, that made me glad I have my friendly Google […]

Now this is what I call Sci-Fi

April 30, 2015 by Lizbth Leave a Comment

I am so far behind on reviewing that I’ve started to forget what I’ve read, although I recall a three day Courtney Milan marathon so Malin and Mrs Julien will be happy when I get round to reviewing them. First though, the best SF novel I’ve read since Anathem.   Mark Watney is one sixth of the third manned mission to Mars, and it turns out that third time is not, in fact, the charm: during evacuation six days into the mission, he is left […]

Science and Absurdity

April 24, 2015 by Sophia 4 Comments

My interest in science and space has grown exponentially from practically non-existent to almost moderate thanks to The Martian, and now, What if?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions (2014) by Randall Monroe. Reading detailed, scientific answers with lots of math and equations that I don’t understand isn’t normally my thing. So I was afraid when I picked up What if? that it might turn into a plod. Fortunately Munroe exceeded my expectations, entertaining me throughout and even teaching me a thing or two. The key to this book […]

This book pissed me off.

April 4, 2015 by narfna 2 Comments

So, here’s the deal. I was going to try and write a cogent, well-thought out review of exactly why I disliked this book so much, but it’s not working out that way. The more I sit here trying to think of things to say, the more my blood pressure skyrockets and I get more and more retroactively angry at the book. At first, I wanted to give this book two stars, because there are a couple of essays in here that felt valid to me, […]
