H.G. Wells is the villain for boring me to death

The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells

April 11, 2026 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

Sometimes the idea of a story is a thousand times better than the actual story, as is the case with H.G. Wells’s The Invisible Man. I look at that cover and think, “This is going to be one badass book–a fun, light read that will nevertheless leave me pondering the nature of loneliness and isolation.” (Okay, I didn’t get all of that from the cover.) With fewer than 200 pages, this book turned out to be an unexpected slog and I’m still not sure what […]

War of the Worlds

War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

September 22, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

Another book that peculiarly shows the thinking of its time (Island of Doctor Moreau also did this with its obsession with vivisection) War of the Worlds seems to suggest that science expected people to eventually evolve their bodies to the point of over-reliance on technology. Time Machine also did this with the de-evolution, or really over-evolution, of the Eloi and the Morlocks. Here, Wells, suggests that the Martians who invade Earth are just gigantic brains and hands, since technology handles everything else that they could need. I found […]

The Time Machine

The Time Machine by H.G. Wells

September 22, 2024 by jmsudar Leave a Comment

The Time Machine defied my expectations. Primarily, I thought the Eloi in the story were meant to be brilliant geniuses, largely because of how I’ve seen the story reflect in popular culture. Instead, we have very Brave New World vibes where Wells is reflecting on what the future of society may look like if current trends (for the 19th century) continued. The Eloi are shown to be crippled by the plenty in which they live. They have never experienced fire, so one is ready to play […]

The War of the Worlds

The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells

September 19, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

Why is it when it’s a “Classic” I go…yeah this is not for me. I am really regretting not listening to this one. I heard it’s better that way. Trying to read this via my phone browser (yep, could not download as an e-book) was another pain which is why it took me so long to get through it. It’s fine, just not that interesting after a while. Reading about an invasion of aliens from Mars would probably have scared me prior to watching E.T., […]

The world is a constant compromise, a greeting of the other and of yourself.

The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

June 29, 2022 by Emmalita 2 Comments

There is something about Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s writing that just speaks to me. I haven’t read enough of her books to make definitive statements about her writing, but in the works I have read, it feels like she writes with one middle finger raised. It speaks to me. I don’t delude myself, as a white American whose ancestors definitely fucked around in places they should not have been, I am part of the group she is raising that middle finger at, and I am fine with […]

Couldn’t clear the hurdle of suspending my disbelief on this one.

The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells

May 15, 2022 by narfna Leave a Comment

One of the hazards inherent in reading older science fiction (especially sff published before the turn of the century!) is that the science just wasn’t there at the time it was written, and in some unfortunate cases like this one (where we now understand a hell of a lot more about biology and evolution), that makes the book more of a time capsule than a thrilling tale. At least, it did for me. The Island of Doctor Moreau follows Edward Prendick, sole survivor of  of […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.
