Second verse, same as the first with differences

Verse V02: The Second Gate by Sam Beck

March 8, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

After I finished Verse V02: The Second Gate I said, well, time to put in a request for book three Yet, Sam Beck’s next volume is not due until mid/late August 2024. I am not sure I can handle that as I really want to know what happens to everyone and most of us should probably read this (at least) trilogy back-to-back as there is a lot going on and unless you have a great memory, you might have forgotten a few things like I […]

A berry-colored world

My Own World by Mike Holmes

March 7, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Some Spoilers below:  I was not sure what I expected with My Own World, but this is an odd book. I am not sure if author Mike Holmes is basing it off of their own experiences, or if it is a universal story about the misfit and how he tries to overcome things.  If you are a 10-to-14-year-old, you might take it at face value: a boy finds/creates a magic world to hide in. It is a world where he is in charge (unlike his […]

The balance of your magic

Shakti by SJ Sindu

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Shakti is a terribly cute, modern story (several GLBTQ characters and diverse people) but does not dwell on the diversity, but the story of how Shakti herself starts coming of age. This is probably my favorite part as Shakti is representing differences while making it relatable to everyone who reads. Even to the adult-kid-at-heart who is writing this review. SJ Sindu’s book was not an “OMG BEST BOOK EVER!” book, but I liked it and glad I read it now and not when it first […]

The Accursed Vampire V02 The Curse at Witch Camp by Madeline McGrane

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ages ago I read the first The Accursed Vampire graphic novel story. I do not recommend reading volume two The Accursed Vampire V02 The Curse at Witch Camp that long after reading the first and defiantly not before reading volume one. In fact, I almost don’t recommend this series by Madeline McGrane at all. There is something about this series that is off for me. The biggest part is we bounce through the timelines of the characters and there is no warning this is happening. […]

Getting the beat

Garvey's Choice: The Graphic Novel by Nikki Grimes

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Recently, Garvey’s Choice: The Graphic Novel by Nikki Grimes and illustrated by Theodore Taylor III found itself on my reading pile again. However, I was a few pages in before I realized I had read it before. It was funny how a book that I had enjoyed had been forgotten, but even though I had plenty of other things to read, it felt like a good idea to read again instead of moving onto something else. This reading allowed the story to become a bit […]

Bowing down to pressure

Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when you’ve a two week vacation and you’re tired of playing games on your phone? You find the stack of books you have and start reading. And one of those books was Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer.   I’ll start with that it is a fun, modern coming of age story that deals with GLBTQ issues and the pressures we put on ourselves versus just “having fun” when we are doing things that we should/could enjoy.  I will then go on to […]
