The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch

December 27, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

This book is 14 years old, I am, as ever, late to the party. I am also a latecomer to Terry Pratchett (still haven’t read any of the big series, but I’ve read a few others and they’re great), but I’m learning. The combination of Pratchett and Gaiman is brilliant, and it’s a shame they haven’t done more together. So, anyway, satan’s son is born in Oxfordshire. There’s a mix up at the hospital, and the little anti-christ goes home with the wrong family. He’s […]

Forget the past when it’s too terrible to face

December 23, 2014 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Knocking out another VF book club review with Deerskin. Instead of aliens and greek-like gods, we read a dark fairytale about a princess named Lissar whose mother was the most beautiful queen of all the kingdoms. Her beauty so captivating that all the land including the King hardly remember the princess exists. But alas the queen cannot live forever, so she captures her beauty in a striking painting before her death. It’s almost as if she curses her daughter to live behind her shadow even after death. [MILD […]

nine princes in amber cover

Time for some swashbuckling fantasy!

December 23, 2014 by AamilTheCamel Leave a Comment

Forty-first book reviewed as part of the 130 Challenge. It’s been quite a while since I’ve read fantasy and it was nice to go back to it. Nine Princes in Amber is more of a hack and slash style of Fantasy, but it was an interesting read nonetheless. The first half builds the story in terms of shrewd discoveries made by the protagonist Corwin, himself one of the nine living princes of Amber, a fantastical city which is supposed to be on the ‘real’ earth […]

Walk this way, so I can stab you in the head.

While I like them both, I prefer the Walking Dead show to the comics.  How about you?

What’s love got to do with it?

December 22, 2014 by Robyn Robotron Leave a Comment

None of those who gave Sleeping Beauty “true love’s kiss” ever stuck around.  You think that’s because it doesn’t mean what we think it does?

Anarchy & Death: A Love Story

December 20, 2014 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

The Darkest Kiss is a love story between two immortals in modern times. Anya is the (minor) goddess of Anarchy, who loves lollipops, flirting and causing trouble which can sometimes end up in countries going to war. She is on the run from the other gods using her power of teleportation to wander about the earth. She soon becomes obsessed with Lucien, an ancient warrior who is cursed by the Lord of the Underworld. He basically is a grim reaper forced to usher souls to the other side. If he refuses, he actually falls […]
