‘The Habsburgs were the first rulers whose power encompassed the world, and they achieved greatness by luck and by force.’

The Habsburgs: The Rise and Fall of a World Power by Martyn Rady

In The Last Emperor of Mexico: The Dramatic Story of the Habsburg Archduke Who Created a Kingdom in the New World by Edward Shawcross

January 18, 2023 by LittlePlat Leave a Comment

For all the royal watching going on right now, its the British Royal Family that’s hugging the spotlight. And, really, how could they not? Liz the Second—who we all thought was destined to live forever—shockingly popped her clogs last year. And now her grandson seems to be taking his turn airing out the dirty laundry, much to people’s delight. But the lives of royals are always ripe for high drama, if you are into that kind of thing. So I’m going to ring in the […]

Worth your time, but maybe not the lingering headache

The Treatment by Mo Hayder

May 30, 2022 by Zirza Leave a Comment

Crime fiction is an odd thing. Visit your average thriller-horror-Facebook group and you’ll regularly find people looking for books that portray the extremes of human behaviour. “The sicker the better”, as they put it. Weirdly, The Treatment by Mo Hayder is not one that pops up very often – possibly because it’s about 20 years old – but in all honesty, this book is intense. We didn’t believe in Trigger Warnings in 2022 but this book could do with a couple of them.  On a […]

Forget the past when it’s too terrible to face

Deerskin by Robin McKinley

December 23, 2014 by teresaelectro 2 Comments

Knocking out another VF book club review with Deerskin. Instead of aliens and greek-like gods, we read a dark fairytale about a princess named Lissar whose mother was the most beautiful queen of all the kingdoms. Her beauty so captivating that all the land including the King hardly remember the princess exists. But alas the queen cannot live forever, so she captures her beauty in a striking painting before her death. It’s almost as if she curses her daughter to live behind her shadow even after death. [MILD […]

It’s getting plainer all the time

Bonnet Strings by Saloma Miller Furlong

March 2, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

This book is the follow up to Why I Left The Amish.  That book dealt with the author’s “now”, her mature years while confronting her father’s impending death, and her remote past, her childhood.  This book fills in her young adult years. Saloma grew up in an abusive family, physically abused, emotionally damaged, and sexually violated. As we left her in the first book, she was escaping to the real world of her dreams, Vermont. Saloma makes what seems to be a successful transition. She […]

It’s plain to see…

Why I Left the Amish by Saloma Miller Furlong

March 2, 2014 by anotterchaos Leave a Comment

Working as I do with the Amish, it’s interesting for me to get a look at what Amish life is like when we English aren’t around.  Bearing in mind that this is a different state (and the Amish can differ quite a bit from one church district to another, let alone another state), and a different era, it is still clear that the Amish are just people, dealing with many of the same issues we all do, but in a completely different framework. Saloma left […]
