I am giving The Loud House Summer Special a 4 but more of a 3.5 for me. I am not a Nickelodeon kid. I am not a fan of that kind of humor usually. And while I do not think I could watch the show these comics come from, I do think that the kid who likes humor and plain goofiness will be excited to read.
Several mini comics create this book about The Loud Family and their friends, neighbors, and pets. The Loud House Creative Team (and from what I can tell there are a lot) created a great read for readers and reluctant readers alike. And while the books tend to center on one of the Loud sisters (there are 10 of them after all) there is neither a “boy or girl” feeling. Anyone ages 7 to 10 can read. There are also stories that feature a few of the friends of the Loud siblings. And the neighbors are a diverse set of characters. We have biracial families, divorced parents, people of color, a family with gender roles reversed, living with grandparents, and living with an extended family. We end up all over the neighborhood from the mercado of one characters grandparents, to camping in the woods.
The illustrations are pure Nickelodeon and cartoon. They are goofy, very nonrealistic, and perfectly show each of the people. We see the twins, the fashionistas, the goth, and Lincoln outsmarting the genius of the family. Each kid (and adult and animals) personality comes out. Also included is a chart of each person or animal and a few other goodies to check out. (Due June 2021)
