Who is Naaahsa?

Naaahsa is an Artist! by Hali Heavy Shield

May 31, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have two questions about Naaahsa is an Artist! The first is who is Naaahsa? They are an artist and a mentor to the young narrator, but are they also a mother, sibling, grandmother, aunt, a tribal leader, or another member of her people? And the second is, what works were shown at the gallery show, as they work in many mediums. However, that is a small piece of the puzzle and really is a piece that is not overly needed. What is needed is […]

Raising a princess

I’m Going to Be a Princess by Stephanie Taylor

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

At first, I’m Going to Be a Princess was doing nothing for me. It was a typical “I’m a little girl and I want to be a princess.” And I filled in, (a lot like the mother of the story I would assume) the pink and lacey and the pretty dresses and the flowers and the fairies and all the girl stuff that goes with it. Then, I was okay, this is getting better, as the mother starts saying, “Well are you sure you want […]

When they’re apart, they can be connected

Eleanor’s Moon by Maggie Knaus

May 24, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I saw the title of Eleanor’s Moon for some reason, I was thinking it would be a biography of Eleanor Roosevelt, another Eleanor biography, or a fiction story about a girl named Eleanor who would do great things. Instead, it is a terribly sweet story about girl who was born on a bright harvest moon night, and her grandfather, and how the moon connects them. The story is simple, we follow these two best friends as they do almost everything together. They are only […]

Add one kid and one panda and you got panda-monium

Cindy and Panda by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am trying to find all the Benson Shum books I can easily find. There looks like there are several titles that they only illustrated and one or two they have solo written that I will not find, but in the meantime, I have found several others. Such as Cindy and Panda. However, the story was not my favorite, but I adore the illustrations. Panda is so pandorable! I want to make a Panda Pie… I mean make a pie with Panda. Like Cindy does. […]

Keep walking

Paws V01 Gabby Gets It Together by Nathan Fairbairn

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I gave the second book in the PAWS series a higher than I might have score for potential. But after reading book one, I think I need to bump that down. As book one, Paws V01 Gabby Gets It Together, was a real pooper. Book two was probably given a three (I do not remember, but I do remember it did not “grab me” but I figured that was because I hadn’t read book one). This time it is a one, or a 1.5 at […]

I read again, so I review again!

Anzu the Great Kaiju V01 Anzu the Great Kaiju by Benson Shum

Anzu the Great Kaiju V02 Anzu the Great Listener by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have forgotten how long ago I first read the Anzu books by Benson Shum. But I had read something else of theirs recently and wanted to go back and read some of the other titles to see if they were as good as I remembered them. And while the second book Anzu the Great Kaiju V02 Anzu the Great Listener was as good, it did bring into question something from book one Anzu the Great Kaiju V01. Which was, if Anzu is a Kaiju, […]
