I read a lot of Benson Shum

Imagine You and Me by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Can you remember your first best friend? Even if they were, shall we say, not visible to others? Honestly, I cannot remember that friend (or if I had one), but I do remember my special stuffed koala bear friend and the adventures we had. And Parker has many adventures with her own bear friend, Randall. However, there comes a day when one of them makes new friends, but those new friends cannot see the not so real one. No spoilers, (yet you probably can guess […]

Little Seed, Big Heart

Little Seed by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

As of the writing of this review for Little Seed by Benson Shum, I have read six of their books, with the except of Holly’s Day at the Pool, and Alex’s Good Fortune written and illustrated by Shum; Go to Sheep and Hide ‘n’ Sheep by Jennifer Sattler (illustrated by Shum) or Sloth Went by Adam Lehrhaupt (illustrated by Shum). And while looking at what I needed to/had read I realized they are the author/illustrator of First Night of Howlergarten, which I really liked but […]

Add one kid and one panda and you got panda-monium

Cindy and Panda by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am trying to find all the Benson Shum books I can easily find. There looks like there are several titles that they only illustrated and one or two they have solo written that I will not find, but in the meantime, I have found several others. Such as Cindy and Panda. However, the story was not my favorite, but I adore the illustrations. Panda is so pandorable! I want to make a Panda Pie… I mean make a pie with Panda. Like Cindy does. […]

I read again, so I review again!

Anzu the Great Kaiju V01 Anzu the Great Kaiju by Benson Shum

Anzu the Great Kaiju V02 Anzu the Great Listener by Benson Shum

May 22, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have forgotten how long ago I first read the Anzu books by Benson Shum. But I had read something else of theirs recently and wanted to go back and read some of the other titles to see if they were as good as I remembered them. And while the second book Anzu the Great Kaiju V02 Anzu the Great Listener was as good, it did bring into question something from book one Anzu the Great Kaiju V01. Which was, if Anzu is a Kaiju, […]

The Werewolf Stuff

First Night Howlergarten by Benson Shum

September 19, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sadly, I must start my review with a bit of bad news. Sorry folks, but August 2023 is when First Night Howlergarten will be out. However, I want to plug it now as it is FREAKING ADORALBE. And in the meantime, I will be keeping an eye out for more Benson Shum titles. This picture book has two things that I liked about it (a character who is not “over the top” and a slightly unique ending), but the whole package is enjoyable.  We are […]

Tiny Monster Big Ol’ Heart

Anzu the Great Kaiju V01 by Benson Shum

June 7, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Looking around for fun reads I found Anzu the Great Kaiju V01. At first, I was not sure if Benson Shum’s creation would be fun, but the cover had potential. And after reading, I decided that yes, Shum’s book was fun. We follow a tiny monster that is a Kaiju. When they come of age, they get their own city to terrorize. Their own city that they can unleash their own, unique, special talent. And Anzu comes from a long line proud monsters. They can […]

I really enjoyed this one. I was particularly amused at Lady Catherine deBoutgh’s disgust at her assassin’s incompetence.
