Looking around for fun reads I found Anzu the Great Kaiju V01. At first, I was not sure if Benson Shum’s creation would be fun, but the cover had potential. And after reading, I decided that yes, Shum’s book was fun.
We follow a tiny monster that is a Kaiju. When they come of age, they get their own city to terrorize. Their own city that they can unleash their own, unique, special talent. And Anzu comes from a long line proud monsters. They can stomp, roar, and do what all good kaiju’s do. But our young friend Anzu’s special power is a little less than scary. After all, they can create flowers, and other happy goodies. They just have a big heart and really do not like doing most monster things. Their family tries to help them get out their monster side, but things do not work out as hoped. And Anzu learns that being themselves is the best way to be a great monster.
The bright and boldly colored and detailed illustrations are the perfect addition to the story. They not only compliment the text but are almost a character themselves. Shum created kid-friendly, simple but not simplistic, images. They are cartoon but not extreme silly. Though they are silly. And fun. And cute.
This might work best as a solo read but could work in a classroom setting. All ages can enjoy, but probably best for preschool and kindergarten. January 2023 will see the second book in the series.
