Kate Bishop, superhero detective.

April 30, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Didn’t like this one as much as the previous ones, but not because of lack of Clint (although I did miss him), but more because I didn’t really like the bad guy in this one. This one entirely follows Kate in her adventures in L.A., but nothing happens like she thinks it will. When she gets there and tries to check in to her hotel, her card is declined, and her car repossessed. And the nice woman who helps her out and takes her to […]

Pizza dog is the best.

When you think “superhero comic,” nothing about what Matt Fraction is doing with Hawkeye will come to mind. The style alone with its limited color palette and cartoonish art (but in a wonderful, highly stylized way) is enough to set it apart. Each issue (for the most part) stands alone. Also for the most part, the concerns of this comic are not thwarting global domination or defeating bad guys with world-destroying powers or stopping galactic assholes from destroying the Earth. Nope, our two Hawkeyes (Clint […]

Hulk and Iron Man have a bromance, plus some other stuff.

Kelly Sue DeConnick takes over the run of this series from Brian Michael Bendis, and it is already so much better. There are actually three stories in this volume, the first is the title, wherein Bruce Banner and Tony Stark make a bet over who can find and rescue a fellow scientist first. It’s by turns silly and funny and tragic and scary. It feels like the Avengers. I also like the art in this one much better than in volume one. The other Avengers, […]

Hail, Hail, the Gang’s All Here!

April 7, 2015 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A year or two I got back into comic books, and spent many a Saturday morning browsing garage sales and used book stores for anything that tickled my proverbial fancy. I bought a sealed grab bag of comics (gambling for collectors) and opened it up to find a few stray issues of Camelot 3000, a 1980s maxi-series written by Mike Barr and illustrated by Brian Bolland of The Killing Joke fame. The comic looked bananas, so in my weekly trips to the used book stores […]

An overstuffed mash-up of everything you could possibly think of.

The inaugural run of Guardians of the Galaxy started out better than it finished. It started out with a pretty simple premise, and then got more complicated as it went on, when Abnett and Lanning started throwing everything but the kitchen sink into the narrative, including of course, many instances of characters coming back from the dead, among other cliches. I still liked this overall, especially the first half of it. The characters are likable, the dialogue is snappy, the situations operatic. But I feel […]

Sex, comedy, and bank-robbery, with a gooey emotional center.

April 4, 2015 by narfna 8 Comments

This book was So. Much. Fun. Obvious warning here, though. If the title and cover didn’t clue you in, this book has sex in it. The sex is awkward and funny and causes time to stop, but still. It’s sex. Suzie has a very special power. Her orgasms are magical. THEY CAN STOP TIME. And while this is undoubtedly a cool superpower, it also makes her pretty lonely, once she discovers she is the only one this happens to. Until she discovers she isn’t the […]
