A Poem for Dudley Randall: Poet and Publisher of the Black Arts Movement (A Picture Book Biography) by Don Tate and Laura Freeman

August 13, 2026 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Outside of saying A Poem for Dudley Randall: Poet and Publisher of the Black Arts Movement (A Picture Book Biography) by Don Tate and illustrated by Laura Freeman is a picture book biography of the man Dudley Randall, you can’t say a lot else about the theme. Sure I could say I read via an online reader copy, it is due in mid September 2026, I enjoyed learning about a person I had never heard of, and with the facts Tate included some of Randall’s […]

Willi Ninja: Vogue Legend by Joy Michael Ellison

September 12, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I need a quick read I head to my piles of reader copies. Sometimes I need to go to my online links and sometimes I have physical copies. This time it was an online reader copy for Willi Ninja: Vogue Legend by Joy Michael Ellison and illustrator Nabi H. Ali.   Due mid-May 2026 you’ll be just in time to learn about Willi Ninja and become inspired to dance like him in the hot summer nights. Yes, Mr. Ninja (not his real name) was […]

Be the Light: How She Became Angela Davis by Daria Peoples

August 20, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you know who Angela Davis is? If you do, you are one up on me. I had never heard of them, or if I had it was just a footnote in history. And to be honest, Davis deserves to be more than a footnote. She needs her own thousand paged book. Instead I must settle for the clever picture book (currently available but read on line) Be the Light: How She Became Angela Davis written and illustrated by Daria Peoples. Davis was born in […]

One Girl's Voice : How Lucy Stone Helped Change the Law of the Land by Vivian Kirkfield and Rebecca Gibbon

February 27, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You have probably heard of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, but have you heard about Lucy Stone? You might not have, but you should as she would influence Anthony and others to join the women’s rights movement and to keep up the good fight. The title One Girl’s Voice : How Lucy Stone Helped Change the Law of the Land by Vivian Kirkfield and illustrated by Rebecca Gibbon inspired me to google Women’s Right Activists to see if Stone’s name came up. Even […]

The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees by Don Brown

September 28, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am starting this review of The Unwanted: Stories of the Syrian Refugees by Don Brown with this statement: Brown has an agenda with this book, but that is not a bad thing.  It is a complicate book with a complicated theme, yet also, straight forward.  I will add, I have rewritten this review too many times. I was well over 600 words at one point. This book was upsetting, enlightening and a not an all together unpleasant journey, but not one for just anyone. […]
