Catwad Volume 1: It’s Me by Jim Benton

My Little Thief  by Augusten Burroughs

A Pizza My Heart by Stephani Stilwell

The Making of Butterflies by Zora Neale Hurston

March 3, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Time for the round-up of books I want to review but cannot do 250 words each for. They range from picture books to graphic novels. And we see old favoirte authors, new ones, and adult auhotrs coming to dark side (afterall, we are kids and have cookies). Sometimes I like Jim Benton, sometimes I do not. And this was a do not. Catwad Volume 1: It’s Me is a collection of (to some, though the line about running hate for Catwad was amusing) humorous stories […]

Already a Butterfly: A Medication Story by Julia Alvarez

October 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Do you need a reason to read Already a Butterfly: A Medication Story other than the fact it is by Julia Alvarez and Raul Colon? I mean, it almost does not get much better than this. Yet, it does get better when you read this picture book on meditation for kids and even, adults. However, if I have one comment that leans towards a negative it is that the word “medication” is used.  I completely enjoyed the journey of our heroine Mari Posa. I just […]

Claudia & Moth by Jennifer Hansen Rolli

January 4, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was all into Claudia & Moth right up until Claudia paints the moth (literally). My thought is “Wouldn’t this kill the moth?” At the very least, even non-toxic paint for humans could be toxic to a moth. It is only at the end that Claudia learns that the moth has its own beauty that she decides to paint the month in a special way.  I would have written a different ending, but this is Jennifer Hansen Rolli’s choice. However, their illustrations are quite lovely. […]

Flight Behavior, by Barbara Kingsolver

“Stop the logging, stop the lies. Save the monarch butterflies.”

Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver

February 6, 2017 by Gracey the Giant 1 Comment

For years (and years) my favorite Barbara Kingsolver book was The Poisonwood Bible, followed by Prodigal Summer.  And then I read Flight Behavior and I believe that I have a new favorite.  I have enjoyed everything I’ve ever read by Kingsolver, but there is a timeliness to Flight Behavior that makes it extra special. The story features Dellarobia Turnbow, a slight-statured, red-haired farmwife in rural, western Tennessee. Dellarobia has no family outside the family she’s made with her gentle giant of a husband, Cub, and […]
