Full of Grace

Becoming by Michelle Obama

August 18, 2020 by Fiat.Luxury 1 Comment

I often find very popular books…well, underwhelming.  Why did so many people like this book over that book?  Why does [name of a very popular book] still have 5 stars on Amazon/Goodreads, when it’s so trite/boring/unrealistic/eye-rolly?   What made Oprah pick [one book] over the similar but superior [other book]?  Etc, etc.  I’m sure many of you Cannonballers can relate. However, I am DELIGHTED that this book has library waiting lists and 5 star ratings across the board.  I hope everyone reads it, and comes away […]

So this has been a year when sitting down to write book reviews has not been my strong suit.  According to Goodreads, I’ve read 47 books and that may actually be missing one or two; however, I don’t think I’m going to make it to a half Cannonball this year. So, here are some books that I read this fall that I thought were worth mentioning, even if I didn’t give them full reviews at the time. American Like Me-Reflections on Life Between Cultures: America […]

A First Lady to Remember

Becoming by Michelle Obama

December 1, 2019 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Michelle Obama’s Becoming was an inspirational memoir to experience. I gave the audiobook to my mom for Christmas, but ended up borrowing and reading it myself! I had very high expectations for this book. It ended up being more of an emotional journey than I imagined. The Former First Lady recounts her childhood and her family. She goes into great detail of all the sacrifices her parents made for her and her brother in Chicago. My parents are both from nearby Indiana and  Chicago is […]

Michelle Obama is my hero

Becoming by Michelle Obama

September 3, 2019 by Wanderlustful Leave a Comment

I have loved Michelle Obama for years and Becoming just scratched this itch.  This woman! Hard working, humble, gracious, driven, smart, caring and full of so much integrity.  She almost makes me want to be American (and then I remember the health care issues and hug my Canadian passport like a security blanket).  Had Hillary Clinton won the last election I might have read Obama’s memoir in a different light- inspiring yes, but in a world where inspiring things were still relatively common.  Since the […]

Worth all the praise it has been given…

Becoming by Michelle Obama

CBR11 Bingo – Reader’s Choice (in place of Science)   I’ll admit that despite the hype surrounding this book, I initially had little interest in this memoir. It was a ‘meh, I’m sure I’ll get around to it someday, but it’s not near the top of my TBR pile’. I’m thinking it’s partially because I’m not a huge memoir person, partially because I’m not American, and partially because American politics makes my blood boil a little bit (no offence, eh?). But more and more people (specifically […]
