The title to this book misled me a bit. It sounds like a self-help/relationships/gender studies book, but Manhood is about ninety-five percent Terry Crews memoir, and only about five percent advice about being a good guy. This frustrated me a bit; it felt like a little bit of a bait and switch from the publisher or Crews. Celebrity autobiographies seem more prevalent than I can remember, and they vary widely in quality and readability. While this one was not what I expected, it ultimately did […]
The night life ain’t no good life, but it’s my life
As a proud and earnest Texian, I see Willie Nelson as one of the state’s greatest offerings. He captures so well so many of the contradictions inherent in the Texas that I love. Willie loves the Lord, his family, music, smoking, and occasionally kicking some ass. I love all of those things, and I love Willie Nelson, too. It’s A Long Story is not Willie Nelson’s first book; it’s not even his first autobiography. However, I do think this is the definitive Willie biography. Written […]
(Book 2 announced on her blog as coming soon, just yesterday)
Brittany Gibbons’ book Fat Girl Walking is not a diet book. It’s not a self-help book (although there she shares some very helpful things). It is a memoir, and an autobiography, and it is funny as hell. Something Brittany Gibbons is good at that I am not, by the way, is cursing in the course of her writing, making it seem natural for f*** to be in every fourth paragraph or so. I am horrible at this. I do not curse all that much anyways […]
My favorite book of the year: Poelher for the W!
I would like to give this book 10 out of 5 stars, or 100 out of 5. All the stars! I went into this with pretty high expectations because I love Amy Poehler as she is a strong, amazing, funny woman, but this book just blew me away. First of all, the audiobook is where it’s at. Not only does she read it herself, but there are bits read by Kathleen Turner, Carol freaking Burnett and Sir Patrick freaking Stewart. And if celebrity cameos aren’t […]
A Better Piper
I’m assuming everyone has watched the Netflix series by now. Because if you haven’t, then I don’t understand what you are doing with your life. Do you not like being happy? Do you not liking having nice things? The show and the book are very different. But, if you were shying away from picking up the book because Nexflix Piper is a tool, Book Piper is much, much better (as is Book Larry, not that that is much of a feat). But there’s also more of […]
“Benedict Cumberbatch is like Alan Rickman Benjamin Buttoning”
Back in October 2012, when I finally decided to see what all these Cannonballers were on about when they kept gushing about a strange-looking book with a taxidermied mouse on the cover, and gave in and read Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, I didn’t actually know who the Bloggess was. What a sad and empty place my life was up until that point. Once I actually read her first book, I also went out and bought it in audio book (She sings the chapter titles […]
