Adding F*ck to the title makes it seem deeper

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson

February 8, 2020 by KimMiE" Leave a Comment

The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck should be used in marketing classes as prime example of what you can achieve with proper positioning. This book contains some pretty basic self-help advice (decent advice, for the most part) but appeals to a new audience by including fuck in the title. People who scoff at self-help are apt to pick it up and think, “Hey, this guy swears, he must be like me, not like those ultra touchy, feel-gooders who have a Ph.D. in Musicology but […]

Samantha keeps it REAL

January 20, 2018 by teresaelectro 3 Comments

I have been a fan of Samantha Irby’s writing for quite awhile from her blog (bitches gotta eat). I’m also a member of her book lovers Facebook community, Bitches gotta read. Thus, I was already poised to like We Are Never Meeting in Real Life. I adore her humor. And yet, this book exceeded my expectations! Her collection of essays allows Irby to bare her soul with her trademark matter-of-fact no fluff tone. I read the audiobook that she narrates herself, which I highly recommend! Hearing her own […]

Not As Expected

January 20, 2016 by Alix Leave a Comment

How do you review books that are basically someone else’s life narrative? Fat Girl Walking is Brittany Gibbon’s story, and her owning her story. I respect that, and feel no desire to take it to task. In fact, the writing is crisp and the humor sarcastic. There is little I can point to as flawed other than a few instances of casual ableism. I just didn’t like it. And since I rate by the Goodreads system, that means this book gets a single star. Perhaps […]

(Book 2 announced on her blog as coming soon, just yesterday)

December 4, 2015 by NTE Leave a Comment

Brittany Gibbons’ book Fat Girl Walking is not a diet book.  It’s not a self-help book (although there she shares some very helpful things).  It is a memoir, and an autobiography, and it is funny as hell. Something Brittany Gibbons is good at that I am not, by the way, is cursing in the course of her writing, making it seem natural for f*** to be in every fourth paragraph or so. I am horrible at this. I do not curse all that much anyways […]
