Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles

The Princess Bride is my favourite film. Probably of all time. Ask me to name my favourite book, and I really wouldn’t be able to choose, as that would very much depend on genre, my mood, the weather, what I’d eaten recently and I would frankly have trouble even narrowing down a top 10. But my favourite film is The Princess Bride. I have loved it since I first discovered it back in the late 80s (or possibly very early 90s, I can’t say exactly), […]

I feel sort of guilty that I didn’t connect with this more

The two volumes of Maus are Art Spiegelman’s attempts to document the struggles of his parents before and during the Second World War, as well as his not always harmonious relationship with his elderly father. The framing narrative shows Art interviewing his father Vladek about his recollections of the time before and during the war, as well as trying to deal with his temperamental parent, despite their many differences. The illustrations are famous and the subject matter is, of course, very worthy. So why didn’t […]

Yes Please! Thank you!

My 26th review puts me at a half-Cannonball AND means I’ve now doubled the amount of books that I read last year.  Go me! I’ve been trying to branch out and read some biographies of smart, badass women. I read Tina Fey’s book Bossypants earlier this year and loved it in a way very similar to the way I love this one. The reason these two are close friends is obvious. They have similarities that run deep and are very supportive of each other. […]

I wish Tina Fey was my boss

April 25, 2016 by Bea Pants Leave a Comment

Reasons to read this book: 1. You’re a fan of Tina Fey 2. You’re a fan of smarty, funny women in general Reasons not to read this book: 1. You want all sorts of dirt on celebrities she’s worked with 2. Smart, funny women make you uncomfortable. I was certainly familiar with Tina Fey’s body of work and, like many other women, I related to Liz Lemon. I’ve also been adding many biographies of women I admire to my To Be Read Mountain lately […]

Growing up in war – a surprisingly delightful read!

February 17, 2016 by tillie 3 Comments

So people have been raving about this book for years and, as per usual, I am so late to the station that the train has already traversed the planet and come all the way back to drop its passengers off. It wasn’t until a friend literally pressed the book into my hand and commanded me to read it that I finally did. This time I should’ve gotten on the train sooner. So why didn’t I? Well people kept raving about the book, but every time […]

Music connects us all

January 25, 2016 by KatSings 1 Comment

“Life is a big, long free fall, and the sooner you can embrace what is beautiful about that, the sooner you will start to enjoy the ride.”  Sounds Like Me: My Life (so far) in Song – Review on KatsCannon Some important information before I dive into this review. I’m a singer, I have a degree in Music with a concentration in musical theatre, and I love Sara Bareilles’ music with my whole heart. This memoir, as Lani Diane Rich from StoryWonk would say, was […]
