Dr Who Meets The Rook with Game of Thrones-level Dysfunction

December 24, 2016 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I picked up Just One Damned Thing After Another because I had been considering it and because I had a coupon for a local bookstore, and I don’t say no to those often. I usually don’t like first person narrative and I still don’t, but there was enough story and character here to over-ride that instinct. This story can’t quite decide if it wants to be action-adventure, character driven, sci-fi, or romance-drama. While it’s not a total success, overall the blend works pretty well. The problem […]

Didn’t really see what the fuss is about

Carol Danvers, who is apparently a hot-shot pilot and one of the Avengers, lives in the crown of the Statue of Liberty (you can do that?) with her sister and niece. When the Avengers find an escape pod from a spaceship with an alien refugee inside it, they decide that Carol be the one to return the girl to her homeworld, as well as take up a more permanent presence in space as a representative for the Avengers Initiative. As she returns the girl to […]

Crazy Ass, Fighter Chick with a Purple Fire Blade that Spawns from Her Chest

June 28, 2016 by Andrea Krieter Leave a Comment

Rating: 3/5 I received a copy through the group YA Buddy Readers’ Corner on goodreads in return for an honest review. Summary: Demorn is a refugee/mercenary from Asanti- her home world that has been destroyed. She is haunted by Kate, her lover, and Firethorn, the magical dimension where Kate was murdered. Demorn runs on vengeance doled out by the Innocents- a club of mercenaries/assassins that protect her brother and give her a home. But something is not right with the world. Evil creatures are invading […]

The ultimate popcorn-book. Is that a thing? It should be a thing.

February 3, 2016 by tillie 5 Comments

I have an 80’s music playlist on Spotify. It is named “the greatest decade known to mankind”. This may have greatly influenced my review of Ready Player One. (And just like the book, my playlist is not religiously limited to the 80’s). I loved Ready Player One. I held it close, I stroked it, I stayed up all night to…read it. It is my soulmate, my dream, my future, my everything. Ahem. Sorry. It’s been awhile since I was truly excited about a book. So […]

Why is this book over? How am I not still reading it?

January 25, 2016 by borisanne 2 Comments

What a breathtaking novel. Enormous in every possible way, and yet somehow totally personal and relatable. I devoured “Alif the Unseen,” and I wish I were still reading it. On its surface, “Alif the Unseen” is the story of a young man, a hacker in a present day un-named police state in the Persian Gulf. He has girl troubles and so he codes a pretty little program to hide his digital presence from his ex-girlfriend, and in doing so taps into the world of jinn […]

Season three of Daredevil?

December 31, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

Like so many others, I was a huge fan of the first season of the Netflix series Daredevil. I decided that the time had come to look at some source material. In what could easily become season three of the series, Karen Page, Matt Murdock’s former legal secretary and ex-girlfriend is down on her luck in Mexico. After a failed porn career, she’s now a heroin junkie and she sells Matt’s secret identity as Daredevil for her next fix. The name falls into criminal mastermind […]
