Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim

by Leave a Comment

When Shiori’s stepmother curses her brothers to turn into cranes and exiles Shiori into the distant north, she’s determined to save them no matter how difficult the method. But it turns out that the truth of her mission might be more complicated than she thought. I love “The Six Swans,” the fairytale which this story is based off of – it’s such a unique and adventurous story. So I have had this book on my TBR for a very long time. Lim does a great […]

When it is time

Quiet Crossings by Vivi Partridge, Sal Sawler and Janaina Spada

Quiet Crossings by Vivi Partridge (with Sal Sawler (editor) and Janaina Spada (colorist)) is, in a few words, an interesting read. The ideas of death, anxiety, depression, and living with the aftermath are poetically dealt with. The main characters are diverse, unusual and for the most part, likeable. Our main character/point of view character, Selena, has moments where you don’t necessarily like how she is reacting, but it is understandable.  We follow about a year’s worth of events. Selena is now working at an Inn, […]

And then I read volume two

Huck, Volume 2: Big Bad World by Mark Millar, Rafael Albuquerque and various

While I wasn’t as into Huck, Volume 2: Big Bad World as I was the first one, Huck Volume 1: All-American, Huck and the Supers are an interesting group of people and their continuation story has its appeal. Creators Mark Millar (author), Rafael Albuquerque (illustrator), Dave McCaig (colorist), and Clem Robins (letterer), made a world where our hero of book one, Huck (a big, sweet, not the brightest cookie in the jar, but has a big ol’ heart kind of guy), has found himself a […]

Captain Superman

Huck Volume 1: All-American by Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque

by Leave a Comment

If Superman was a smidgen less Super and more Man, but still had powers and Captain America had no Captain in his name, but still had a really big heart, pumped gas for a living and was not the smartest cookie in the container, you would have Huck Volume 1: All-American by Mark Millar and illustrator Rafael Albuquerque.  The character of Huck is a bit of a clique. He is nice, sweet, good looking, not too bright but has a giving heart. He’ll find things, […]

Books can have legacy sequels too, right?

Life Out of Order by Audrey Niffenegger

This was an ARC. Thank you to NetGalley and Hanover Square Press. My opinions are entirely my own. This book is on sale now. In recent years, legacy sequels, coming out several decades after the previous movie, have become popular. Some are surprisingly great, like Creed and Blade Runner 2049, while others make you wonder why they exist in the first place (The Devil Wears Prada 2 and Practical Magic 2: Family Legacy, to name two that I watched over the summer). Life Out of […]

Obsession: Not the hot new perfume

Ryunosuke Akutagawa's Hell Screen: The Manga Edition (Tuttle Japanese Classics in Manga) by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa and Mihiro

Ryunosuke Akutagawa’s Hell Screen: The Manga Edition (Tuttle Japanese Classics in Manga) by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa and Mihiro (adapter) is very literary. Being just enough spooky to not be “safe for work” but not necessarily over the top, but it is mature. And I cannot tell you what I feel about the story because W T F?????????????????  It is torture porn (but you know, done nicely). It is the madness of a man who has greatness and those around him who want and envy it. It […]
