Oberon the wolfhound is my favourite character

September 21, 2014 by Malin Leave a Comment

I’m sorry, but if I’m ever going to reach my double Cannonball, I’m going to have to cut corners somewhere: Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbours and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old, when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: he draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields […]

Who knew that Pam and Dwight were secretly warlords?

July 21, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

*Disclaimer: this post refers to the audiobook.* I never really got into audiobooks (unless they were the Harry Potter books read by Jim Dale), but my sister recommended B.J. Novak’s One More Thing specifically for the audiobook. I gave it a try, and it’s been a delight. I’ll be separating this review into the content and then the medium of audiobook, because there are separate things to say about each of them. First, the stories themselves: it’s a mixed bag of genuinely interesting, too-clever, and […]

Yet another wonderful series I missed reading as a child.

July 8, 2014 by narfna 8 Comments

Because I listen to audiobooks when I’m in the car, I went for a drive yesterday evening just to finish this series. Time and gas well spent. Really enjoyed making my way through this series over the last month and a half. Some of the best children’s fantasy I’ve read. Wish I would’ve read it as an actual child. And with one notable exception (which I’m not sure would have actually changed for me all that much if I’d read it the old fashioned way […]

You guys, this book was a such thrill-ride

June 26, 2014 by Malin 5 Comments

I snooze, I lose. I was hoping to be the first one to publish a review of Skin Game, but Emmalita/Rochelle beat me to it. Standard spoiler warning! This is book 15 in the series. You don’t want to start here. If you’re not caught up with the series, you may want to skip this review, because while I’m going to try to not spoil this actual book, I can’t actually avoid spoilers for some of the previous ones. It took me a long time to get hooked on these […]

Sisters, Old English Manors, Shell Shock, and Slow-Moving Disappointment

May 20, 2014 by narfna 4 Comments

I probably should have written my review of this book closer to finishing it, because as of right now, my reaction is pretty much just: Meh. The House at Riverton is a post-WWI gothic type novel that chronicles the life of the Hartford family through the eyes of young Grace Bradley, a servant at Riverton Manor from the age of fifteen. Grace is now ninety-nine years old and recounting the story of her time with the Hartfords (particularly with the two sisters, Hannah and Emmeline) […]

This could make a great TV show.

May 2, 2014 by narfna 1 Comment

The day I finished reading this book, the news broke that SyFy had optioned The Expanse as a TV show. It was quite auspicious timing, especially since the third book had done wonders for my excitement over the future of this series. Abaddon’s Gate is the third book in James S.A. Corey’s* Expanse series, and it’s my favorite of the series so far. I am probably going to spoil them (probably meaning definitely), so don’t read any farther if you’re planning on reading. The first […]
