Cursed Chattans

February 28, 2017 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the second and third books in the Chattan Curse trilogy, The Scottish Witch and The Devil’s Heart. The first book in this series was a little too woo-woo with the curse bit, setting up the back story, and I think it got in the way of the rest of the story. The second and third don’t seem to have this problem, which makes them much more enjoyable. There are bits about the curse, but they are actively looking to do away […]

A Whole Bunch of Bones

February 28, 2017 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the first three novels in the Dinah Pelerin mystery series, Bones of Contention, Bet Your Bones, and Bonereapers. These titles are what happens when you get a clever naming scheme and then run out of ones that make sense in a hurry (see also John Sanford’s Prey series). There were things I liked and things I didn’t in this series. First some things I liked. Dinah is an independent woman, she enjoys men and even has relationships, but doesn’t need their […]

Doyle Meets His Match

February 28, 2017 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the audiobook version of The Forbidden Rose, third book in the Spymasters series by Joanna Bourne, read by Kirsten Potter. You guys were right, the series gets better, and this one is the best yet. This time we go back to the Reign of Terror, and see how Doyle met his Maggie. Marguerite de Fleurignac, a brave noblewoman who spends her evenings evacuating families to spare them from the guillotine, is found alone in her burned out chateau by Guillome de Breton, an […]

Neil’s Bride

February 15, 2017 by sarah_jwh 2 Comments

This review is for the audiobook of Lyon’s Bride, by Cathy Maxwell. It is the first in a trilogy about a family cursed by a Scottish witch. The Chattan’s are cursed to die if they fall in love with their wives, so Neil Chattan, known as Lord Lyon (but I don’t know why, it doesn’t seem to have been what his father was known as, so i don’t know if it’s his title?) hires a matchmaker to find him a bride he could never love, […]

The Blandest of Ashes

February 15, 2017 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the audiobook version of The Beautiful Ashes, by Jeaniene Frost. It’s the first in a series by the same author as The Night Huntress series, which was a fun read. The new one, not so much. The heroine is kind of blah. She’s really young, really inexperienced, and kind of wishy washy sometimes, which I guess I was too when I was 20. Following the disappearance of her younger sister and the sudden death of her parents, Ivy Jenkins goes searching […]

What Friction?

February 15, 2017 by sarah_jwh Leave a Comment

This review is for the audiobook version of Friction, by Sandra Brown.  I’ve read and enjoyed other books by Sandra Brown, but this one didn’t really grip me. Crawford Hunt wants his daughter back but her grandparents are fighting him for custody. While Crawford is on the stand for a custody hearing, a masked shooter enters the courtroom and opens fire. Crawford, who happens to be a Texas Ranger, protects the judge and chases the man from the room. Later, afraid his actions will jeopardize […]
