Monster, Volume 1 by Naoki Urasawa

This manga has been making the rounds on YouTube, so when Read Harder prompted me to read a graphic novel/comic/manga if I hadn’t before (I had of course) OR read one in a genre I hadn’t read from before, this manga started calling out to me. I’ve actually read almost every genre I can think of in graphic format, but for some reason I’ve overlooked crime/suspense/thriller. Tracking this down was a bit of a challenge, especially because my library doesn’t have any copies, but luckily […]

“The Chicken Basket,” Peter announced. “The sheep bucket,” Caleb declared promptly. “What game is this?”

Peter Cabot Gets Lost (The Cabots, #2) by Cat Sebastian

June 2, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Whoops, just realized I never wrote a review of this and I’m starting book three today, so I need to get this done before my brain starts mixing things up. I don’t have much to say about this even though I gave it five stars. I basically just want to say “This was a perfect romance novella” and call it a day. But I have to reach 250 words to count on this here Cannonball Read so I will keep going. This is historical fiction novella set […]

“We seek for every possibility of life and sentience, because the universe is vast and cold and mostly empty, and variance from that void is to be treasured.”

Children of Memory (Children of Time, #3) by Adrian Tchaikovsky

June 2, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I was thoroughly discombobulated for the majority of my reading experience with this book. That was the way it was supposed to be, of course, so minor spoilers for that I guess? I don’t think that’s actually spoilers, but some people would probably think it is. Anyway, I didn’t anticipate that level of purposeful fuckery on behalf of Adrian Tchaikovsky, and the slow creep of the feeling that something was not right was simultaneously unpleasant and intriguing. This is the third (and final??) book in […]

If you want to know where the boy in the woods came from, just skip straight to book two.

The Boy From the Woods (Wilde, #1) by Harlan Coben

June 2, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I don’t even know what to say for this one! First time reading Harlan Coben. It’s not what I was expecting, especially from a bestselling author who numbers Stephen King among his fans (I first added him to my TBR after a mention of one of his books in The Outsider). Those are high standards! And this was . . . not great. And it had such a good premise! Which is almost entirely wasted. It’s your standard, really not all that well-written, thriller. Nothing special […]

“It was a trap after all,” Alric said. He turned to Royce. “My apologies for doubting your sound paranoia.”

Theft of Swords (The Riyria Revelations, #1-2) by Michael J. Sullivan

June 1, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was fun! It was a plot-forward fantasy adventure story, and even though we’ve seen many of these plots before in different configurations, I think because I haven’t read a lot of plotty adventure fantasy in the past several years, it felt fresh to me. Also, it’s just a really well done version of this type of story. I will definitely be continuing in the series. Okay, but Theft of Swords! Which is a bind-up of the first two books in The Riyria Revelations (The Crown […]

A major bummer.

Sizzle Reel by Carlyn Greenwald

June 1, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

Thanks to NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage, and Anchor for the ARC. It hasn’t affected the contents of my review. Bullet pointing this “review” because I have emotionally abandoned this book and just cannot be bothered. *I was into this for first 10%, despite the terrible choice to write in first person present tense. *The blurb is extremely misleading. This is a friends to lovers romance. By the time I realized this was what was happening, it was too late for me to enjoy it, […]

I think there is more visibility for stories with older and middle aged women. I’m here for it.
