The CBR10 Book Bingo Reading Challenge Begins!

August 1, 2018 by MsWas 79 Comments

As part of our anniversary year, I’m pleased to announce that our first ever Bingo Reading Challenge has officially begun! Select five squares across, down, diagonally, or 5-up (four corners + center square), and get an entry into a drawing for some cool prizes. Complete the entire card – a blackout! – and get 15 entries into our drawing. Detailed prize information to follow, but I can say right now that the current list includes autographed books and a CBR tote bag filled with bookish things.

Hooray for Hollywood… eventually

Mendoza in Hollywood by Kage Baker

June 12, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

So far, hands down this is the best book so far in “The Company” series. It’s the first one I read, *gasp* OUT OF ORDER! But what a killer title, how could I resist? I was young and naive. 2018 me would never do such a thing! The book starts off with Mendoza in a private hearing in 1863, and right away, she confesses to the two auditors (Company men) that she’s killed seven mortal men. We see that she’s eating Theobromos, the chocolate that intoxicates […]

Wily Coyote

Sky Coyote by Kage Baker

May 27, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

Kage Baker’s “Company” series began with a volume focused on Mendoza the botanist, and in this second volume in the series the narration turns to the man who made her what she is, Joseph. A Facilitator Grade One with the company for thousands of years, Joseph was the one who spotted Mendoza during the Spanish Inquisition and recruited her. In Sky Coyote, it’s 1699, a century and a half since Joseph was the head of the family in Tudor England during Mendoza’s doomed romance. The […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: ardaigle

April 19, 2018 by MsWas 10 Comments

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? First of all, I had literally no idea how many times I participated! Thanks to the immortality of WordPress, I now know I have been participating since Cannonball Read 5 (!) so this is my 6th time. I have fluctuated between doing a half and full cannonball, and this year I am back for the whole enchilada. It doesn’t change how I read, but it has changed how I retain […]
