History and its Bastards. Greedy, Greedy Bastards.

King Leopold’s Ghost: A Story of Greed, Terror, and Heroism in Colonial Africa. by Adam Hochschild

The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company by William Dalrymple

May 29, 2023 by LittlePlat 2 Comments

I think I am going to spend my Memorial Day weekend writing about history. And it’s not going to be about the nice bits of history, either. I have been holding off on a number of these reviews because sometimes the subject matter was just a little too depressing. At best, we are dealing with a conga line of arseholes. At best. And at worst? Well, we’re dealing with some pretty bad ‘at worsts’ here…  The first book is Adam Hochschild’s King Leopold’s Ghost: A […]

Hooray for Hollywood… eventually

Mendoza in Hollywood by Kage Baker

June 12, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

So far, hands down this is the best book so far in “The Company” series. It’s the first one I read, *gasp* OUT OF ORDER! But what a killer title, how could I resist? I was young and naive. 2018 me would never do such a thing! The book starts off with Mendoza in a private hearing in 1863, and right away, she confesses to the two auditors (Company men) that she’s killed seven mortal men. We see that she’s eating Theobromos, the chocolate that intoxicates […]

Wily Coyote

Sky Coyote by Kage Baker

May 27, 2018 by MsWas Leave a Comment

Kage Baker’s “Company” series began with a volume focused on Mendoza the botanist, and in this second volume in the series the narration turns to the man who made her what she is, Joseph. A Facilitator Grade One with the company for thousands of years, Joseph was the one who spotted Mendoza during the Spanish Inquisition and recruited her. In Sky Coyote, it’s 1699, a century and a half since Joseph was the head of the family in Tudor England during Mendoza’s doomed romance. The […]

24th Century Schizoid Botanist

In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker

March 18, 2018 by MsWas 7 Comments

I looked back and I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since I wrote a review of Still Life, the first book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. I’ve been so happy to see a lot of you are enjoying them too. The Company series by Kage Baker is my next recommendation, but I’m not going to promise you’ll like them. I will say that I love them, and I hope you do too. Of course you must pick up the first book, In the […]
