Quick Questions With a Cannonballer: dAvid

March 22, 2018 by MsWas 6 Comments

Welcome to CAnnonball ReAd! I realize it might be too early to tell, but I always ask: can you tell if it’s changing the way you read? Thanks! It’s long overdue for me to join up, but I’m having a great time so far. I’m definitely paying closer attention as I read. I worried that it would slow me down (I’ve never been a super-fast reader), but I really haven’t slowed at all. I’ve started taking a few notes as I’m reading to remember quotes […]

24th Century Schizoid Botanist

In the Garden of Iden by Kage Baker

March 18, 2018 by MsWas 7 Comments

I looked back and I can’t believe it’s been almost three years since I wrote a review of Still Life, the first book in Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache series. I’ve been so happy to see a lot of you are enjoying them too. The Company series by Kage Baker is my next recommendation, but I’m not going to promise you’ll like them. I will say that I love them, and I hope you do too. Of course you must pick up the first book, In the […]

Book Club Discussion Post: A Wrinkle in Time

February 23, 2018 by MsWas 15 Comments

Here we go, time to discuss A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle!  For many of you, this was a reread of a childhood book. For others, it was your first time delving into L’Engle’s worlds; but we’ve all heard the title over the years, and it’s been a bastion of Science Fiction since the sixties. Science fiction has often been used as a way to explore “otherness” as a theme. Alien beings and distant worlds offer us a way to think about different cultures […]

Quick Questions with a Cannonballer: mathildehoeg

February 12, 2018 by MsWas 8 Comments

How many times have you participated in CBR? Has it changed the way you read? I first participated in CBR6, so this would be my 4th Cannonball Read. I first signed up to motivate myself to get back into reading and my first year was a smashing success. The second and third year…we don’t speak of those. Last year I almost made my goal of 52 books, but fell short by one because Christmas and travel and other terrible excuses – I did actually read […]

Discussion Topics: A Wrinkle in Time

February 7, 2018 by MsWas 3 Comments

With Ava DuVernay’s movie adaptation coming out in a month, we’re tying our first #CannonBookClub of 2018 with this 1962 science fiction fantasy classic. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle won the Newbery Medal and was runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Award among others. Here’s some food for thought as we get ready to discuss on February 23 and 24. Make sure to tag #CannonBookClub if you’re posting about the book, and please share the cover of your version!
