I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Judgement for the Selkies

The Unkindest Tide by Seanan McGuire

September 7, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I was looking at reviews of the previous novel in this series, Night and Silence, and discovered that it had a rather mixed reception.  My own review was positive but I can also definitely see why people would have had issues with the previous novel.  I loved the further revelations about the wider world of Fae, the discovery of Amandine’s origins (ie the rest of her parentage), and other family line discoveries that Toby made – I don’t remember finding the mystery itself that exciting.  […]

Just Desserts for the Terrible Nephew

Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan

September 7, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This novella is part of Milan’s Worth Saga but it’s been long enough since I read any of the other novels or novellas in the series that I honestly couldn’t remember these characters from the other books. All I knew going in was that it followed two older/elderly women, and I had made an assumption about who one of the characters might be based on After the Wedding, but I was incorrect. Miss Violet Beauchamps has devoted her life to managing a rooming house for […]

Choice, Purpose and Design

A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers

September 6, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

While A Closed and Common Orbit deals with the aftermath of the events The Long Way to Small, Angry Planet, it can be read independently.  The novel alternates between the view points of two characters.  Lovelace/Sidra’s perspective takes place directly after the other novel, and Jane’s chapters take place about 20 years prior, and explore how she ended up escaping a planet where she was genetically engineered for one specific function/job.  This isn’t a spoiler since Pepper was introduced in the previous novel as a […]

Could I have an assistant to manage dating for me, too?

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

September 5, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I picked this one up based on badkittyuno’s review.  All of those novels she mentioned (I downloaded two of them because they are also on Kindle Unlimited) sounded like the comfort food version of reading.  Sweet, hopeful, happy endings, not too challenging, and a pleasant way to spend an afternoon if ultimately forgettable. Three years ago, Amy Byler’s husband did not come home from a business trip to Hong Kong.  It would be one thing if he had left, but he also neglected to continue […]

There’s a Darkness at the Edge of Town

Two Can Keep a Secret by Karen M. McManus

September 5, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This is one of my super overdue and late reviews – I read this towards the end of January/beginning of February so let’s just say I’m not going to get super detailed on this review. This novel was a good follow up, and despite the two in the title it’s not a sequel even if it is her second book. I liked One of Us is Lying more, though, because it was more teen focused while this one had more adult involvement. This novel, in […]

New Trilogy Set in a World That Still Has So Much to Explore

Sapphire Flames by Ilona Andrews

September 5, 2019 by Jen K 2 Comments

One thing I love about my Kindle is the ability to make pre-orders because on my own I lose track of publishing dates.  The fact that as soon as a favorite author has a release date, I can pre-order it and then it appears in my Kindle months later is amazing.  Sometimes, books pop up on Tuesday morning, and I think, “nice, that will be fun to read once I am done with my current read.” Other times, I immediately drop everything else that I […]
