Just Desserts for the Terrible Nephew

Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan

September 7, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

This novella is part of Milan’s Worth Saga but it’s been long enough since I read any of the other novels or novellas in the series that I honestly couldn’t remember these characters from the other books. All I knew going in was that it followed two older/elderly women, and I had made an assumption about who one of the characters might be based on After the Wedding, but I was incorrect. Miss Violet Beauchamps has devoted her life to managing a rooming house for […]

“Happiness is not just an act of optimism – it is an act of defiance.” (CBR11Bingo)

Mrs. Martin's Incomparable Adventure (Worth Saga #2.75) by Courtney Milan

July 13, 2019 by faintingviolet 1 Comment

Courtney Milan really is fantastic at writing novellas. Even the ones I don’t love are still fantastic reads. The Governess Affair is one of my favorite books, period, and A Kiss for Midwinter is one of the few books I’ve read more than once in the past several years. Mrs. Martin’s Incomparable Adventure ranks right up there with them. While the book is part of the Worth Saga books, it absolutely stands alone, which I can attest to because the only other book in the […]

Yelling at Terrible Men

Mrs. Martin’s Incomperable Adventure by Courtney Milan

March 25, 2019 by Emmalita 4 Comments

Author’s Note: Sometimes I write villains who are subtle and nuanced. This is not one of those times. The Terrible Nephew is terrible, and terrible things happen to him. Sometime villains really are bad and wrong, and sometimes, we want them to suffer a lot of consequences. I received this novella as an ARC and this is an honest review. Mrs. Bertrice Martin is a wealthy widow of 73 who is bored and depressed. Miss Violetta Beauchamps is a poor spinster of 69 who has […]

To be someone’s choice

May 7, 2018 by Jen K Leave a Comment

It’s been quite a while since the previous novel in The Worth Saga was released, and while I remembered the main story about the family’s downfall due to the father’s treason and two protagonists reconnecting after years of estrangement, I had actually forgotten my reaction to some of the characters until I saw an old comment I had made on Malin’s Goodreads review.  Apparently, Theresa, the youngest sister, had seriously grated my nerves in the first one. Milan obviously toned her down quite a bit […]

I Deserve a Slow Falling in Love.

April 23, 2018 by Emmalita 9 Comments

As a cherry on the sundae of a wonderful week, I received an advance reader copy of After the Wedding by Courtney Milan, in exchange for an honest review. I can say honestly that I love it. I love Camilla and Adrian. Happily ever after is built into the genre, it is a given. We know before we open the book that Camilla and Adrian will fall in love. The joy of reading Romance is seeing exactly how the author takes us down this familiar path. […]

In Romance, You Can Face Reality and Still Have a Happy Ending

April 21, 2018 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Once Upon a Marquess came out a couple of years ago to high expectations and was received with some disappointment. It was still a Milan, so it was still better than your average Romance, but it lacked the ease of her previous books. I am glad that I opted to reread it in anticipation of the forthcoming After the Wedding. Without the weight of expectation and with the context of some of the issues with which the author has struggled, it was a much better read. […]
