I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. A Character Study in a Suspense Novel

Since We Fell by Dennis Lehane

August 27, 2019 by Jen K 1 Comment

I quite enjoy Dennis Lehane’s novel; I love The Given Day, quite like his Patrick Kenzie and Angela Gennaro mysteries, and think Mystic River was amazingly written.  He doesn’t just write good mysteries, I also enjoy the writing itself. The novel begins with a prologue which reveals to the reader that when Rachel is 35, she kills her husband by shooting him.  The novel then goes back in time and slowly shows the reader how Rachel got to that day in her life, and what […]

Welcome to the Grand Palace on the Thames

Lady Derring Takes a Lover by Julie Anne Long

August 27, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I’m mostly familiar with Julie Anne Long due to her Pennyroyal Green series which followed two rival families, the Redmonds and Everseas.  I was glad to see that she had a new historical romance out, and I quite like the premise she is using for this new series. Lady Derring is newly widowed, and she discovers that her husband has left her with nothing.  Most of his property is entailed and going straight to distant male heirs, and then of course there are the debts.  […]

The Scope May Have Been Too Wide/Ambitious

The Night Tiger by Yangsze Choo

August 26, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I loved Yangsze Choo’s novel, The Ghost Bride, so I was happy when I discovered that this novel had been released, and immediately bought it. It is set in 1930s Malaysia and has three different characters whose lives end up interweaving in odd ways. There is Ji Lin, a young woman, who is working in the city as a dress maker and moon lighting as a dancer.  Though she had higher ambitions, her family would not let her go into a profession, and only eventually […]

I Might Prefer the Movie Because of the Perfect Casting Decisions

Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon

August 26, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Madeline Whittier is a teenage girl, but unlike other teenage girls, she doesn’t leave her house.  The only humans she interacts with face to face are her mother and her nurse/care taker and the very rare in person visit from her tutor.  Most of her communication is over the computer and the internet. Maddy has an incredibly rare disease that has left her with an immune system that is basically non-existent.  She can’t step outside without risk of becoming sick and dying, and everyone that […]

When Evolution is Sudden and Dramatic

The Power by Naomi Alderman

August 26, 2019 by Jen K 4 Comments

This novel was reviewed quite a bit on the site last year, but the mixed reviews (“interesting concept but …”) made me decide against reading it.  I was looking at potential book clubs to join and one of the ones I was considering listed this novel as the next read.  I didn’t make it to the book club but I read the novel, thinking I might go. In many ways, I enjoyed this novel much more than I thought I would (I’m sure lowered expectations […]

And This is Why You Don’t Make Deals at the Crossroads

That Ain't Witchcraft by Seanan McGuire

August 26, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

The Crossroads have long played a background role in the InCryptid series.  Grandfather Thomas appears to have had a deal with them (or it?), and their Aunt Mary is one of the ghosts that works for the Crossroads though her relationship with the Prices has let her hold on to her humanity.  She also always warns her extended Price family to stay away from them, very well aware of how easily the deals can turn against the humans desperate enough to make them. The Prices […]
