I’ve been around off and on since the first year of CBR, and it and books have been a constant in my life through multiple moves and a major career change. I live with 3 cats, Dany, Jace and Jorah. Fantasy, specific types of sci-fi, historical fiction (especially mysteries) and romance tend to be my go to genres now a days. Too Clever For Its Own Good

The Paragon Hotel by Lindsay Faye

July 11, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Bingo Square: The Roaring 20’s I loved Lindsay Faye’s The Gods of Gotham and already had a copy of this book – seemed like the perfect fit for the 20’s. From the topic matter and description, it was but I was incredibly disappointed with this novel, especially since it should have been my cup of tea. The narrator is Alice “Nobody” James – as the novel begins, she is on a train, heading to Portland, Oregon with a gunshot wound, fleeing her former life in […]

A Magical Island for Special Children

The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune

July 4, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: I wish … (I wish I could be on a beautiful secluded island during social distancing and also have magical powers) I had been seeing a lot of positive buzz around this novel, and naturally, I was curious about a story with supernatural children.  When Gail Carriger used it as part of a Queer Reads Instagram challenge, I realized it would be a perfect addition to my June reading to at least acknowledge Pride month. In many ways, Linus Baker is a familiar […]

I Wanted More From This

Daring and the Duke by Sarah McLean

July 3, 2020 by Jen K 2 Comments

As the last novel in the Bareknuckle Bastard series, I was looking forward to seeing how Sarah McLean would resolve Grace/Dahlia and Ewan’s story because Grace was definitely a force to be reckoned with in the previous two novels, and I couldn’t wait to see how she would challenge Ewan and keep him on his toes as he attempted to redeem himself. However, Sarah McLean had two major challenges to overcome with writing this novel, so it was tapered excitement. Ewan, the romantic lead of […]

Otherworld Teens!

Wolf's Bane by Kelley Armstrong

Wolf's Curse by Kelley Armstrong

July 1, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

I loved Kelley Armstrong’s Women of the Otherworld series – I think I had read some of the Sookie Stackhouse novels when I read this one but while I lost interest in Sookie, I kept coming back to Armstrong’s diverse (from a magical power perspective) cast of characters. Now, I may mostly talk about Toby Daye and Kate Daniels, but that doesn’t mean I have forgotten about the Otherworld. These were really my starter series that got me interested in other women written urban fantasy […]

“Here is a Story I Have Heard”

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie

July 1, 2020 by Jen K Leave a Comment

I read (and enjoyed) Ann Leckie’s Imperial Radch trilogy last (Ancillary Justice, the first was particularly amazing) so I was surprised to see she had written a fantasy novel.  I enjoy both genres, and I know it isn’t unheard of for authors to switch between genres, but the Radch trilogy had AI and space travel … so definitely what I would consider on the harder side of sci-fi.  The novel’s description was a bit vague so I was very pleasantly surprised when I realized that […]

An Indictment of the Court System

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson

July 1, 2020 by Jen K 1 Comment

Bingo Square: Adaptation (movie) I vaguely remember reading the movie review on Pajiba when this movie came out, and it described it as good but formulaic, so I didn’t go out of my way to watch it (not that I have been watching a lot of dramas to start with).  When it became free to rent, I decided to check it out, and while I can see why from a movie reviewer perspective one might describe it as formulaic, there is a reason for that […]
