Only aiming for a quarter Cannonball this year after miserably failing last year, but I've missed the CBR community and the great work done here!

You want something different in a romance? Here you go!

March 25, 2017 by Ellepkay 1 Comment

This is not an easy romance.  Both the hero and heroine are rather unlikeable, almost to the point where you don’t believe they deserve a happy ending.  And yet, this book was really, really good.  It’s a hard book to recommend, but if anything about this review appeals to you, then you should definitely give it a try.  It is the fourth and final book in the No Better Angels series, and while the hero has appeared in every other book of the series I […]

Sometimes you just need a little lightness

March 23, 2017 by Ellepkay 7 Comments

Thanks goes out to the CBR romance crew for introducing me to this sweet book.  Orleanas introduced it, and it kept getting good reviews, so I had to try it too.  What can I say?  I’m easily persuadable.   It’s a very light, contemporary M/M story.  So light that I have very little to say about it, but I’ll give it a try since this is a pleasant story and I’m happy to recommend it. Henry Beckett is 35 and recently dumped by his long-term […]

An old favorite is still great on another read through

March 21, 2017 by Ellepkay 4 Comments

I have read this book several times before, but I’ve never reviewed it, so here we are!  The other day I was going to ask the lovely CBR romance ladies for a recommendation.  I wanted a historical with a house party, good banter, not too many outside plot distractions…and was going to cite this book as an example of what I wanted.  Then I realized that I really just wanted to read this one again (but other suggestions that meet that criteria are always welcome!).  […]

Heartfelt and painful romance

March 15, 2017 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

If you’re looking for a romance with a lot of emotional impact, this is the book for you.   There’s some side shenanigans with international intrigue, but the heart of this story is two people learning about themselves and learning to love each other. This is a book that I’ve intended to read for years. I’m not sure what took me so long to get to it, but it’s finally (*finally*) off the TBR pile .  (I double checked, and I bought this book in […]

Light escapism, and a lot of fun

March 12, 2017 by Ellepkay 2 Comments

Beth Ellen was kind enough to lend me this one and it was a lovely break from all the historicals I’ve been reading.  Not nearly as good as the books I’ve read in her Amour et Chocolat series, but fun escapism. Violette Lenoir is the head chef at a 2 star Michelin restaurant.  She is only in her late 20s and has been working towards this goal for over 10 years.  She is very tough and no nonsense (you can tell this because she wears […]

Modern acting heroines in historical settings are my jam

March 11, 2017 by Ellepkay Leave a Comment

This series got off to a good start with a novella, and I liked this first full length novel even more.  I’m not crowing about a new favorite author or anything, but this was a solid book and really hit the spot for what I wanted to read. Elizabeth Sloane is a young woman brought up in incredible privilege in New York during the Gilded Age (I can’t remember the exact year – late 1880s, I believe).  Her brother runs the family railway and she […]
