“There are two kinds of people in the universe, Molly,” I said. “Star Trek fans and Star Wars fans. This is shocking.” She sniffed. “This is the post-nerd-closet world, Harry. It’s okay to like both.”

Ghost Story (Dresden Files #13) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Surprising All right people. I’m here again with more thoughts on Jim Butcher and The Dresden Files, with book 13. In case you haven’t read my reviews of the previous 12 novels, here are my general impressions: 1. This series is like the Suki Stackhouse Tru Blood books; you just replace a clairvoyant vampire-loving waitress with a wizard half-vampire-loving detective. Silly, sexy, warring, magical fun times abound. 2. I am 60% here for this series because James Marsters, aka, Spike from Buffy […]

Berzerker Barb and Porkchop to save the day, but first… Sausages!

Barb the Last Berzerker by Dan & Jason

October 12, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

According to the publisher content (with a little edit from me), my first review is if: She-Ra/He-Man met Dav Pilkey’s Dog Man. And while I won’t disagree, I do think it is a little less as shall we say, clueless than Dog Man can be. Barb is a young Berzerker who wants in on the action, but the others feel she is too young. But when she is the last one standing, this Dan (Abdo) and Jason (Patterson) graphic novel, she is their only hope […]

“Caring about someone isn’t complicated. It isn’t easy. But it isn’t complicated, either. Kinda like lifting the engine block out of a car.”

Small Favor (Dresden Files #10) by Jim Butcher

In one word: Action-packed Cannonball Read Bingo: Reader’s Choice (Replacing Fauna) Dresden is in it again. High stakes, low chance of survival, will he come out on top? At this point, book 10 of I don’t even know how many, it’s not a spoiler that um, yes, he will. But I will say this one really is firing on all cylinders. The whole gang is around in this one, gangster Marcone, the vile Denarians, and one of my favorites, the Archive, the 12-year-old girl who […]

“What is the point of having free will if one cannot occasionally spit in the eye of destiny?”

White Night by Jim Butcher

September 13, 2021 by cheerbrarian 1 Comment

In one word: Damsels Cannonball Read Bingo: Free! (From my local library) The Dresden Files are what I would call a fun yet forgettable romp. Every time I am writing a review I’m typically behind so I’m already halfway into his next book and have completely forgotten the plot of the previous one. This was no different. This time around I’m actually 3/4 through book 10 already so book 9 is truly a thing of the past. Butcher takes a page from Charlaine Harris (or […]

Follow the Dragon Path home, but watch out for monster sized monsters

The Dragon Path by Ethan Young

August 24, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Dragon Path is the old west, fantasy, science fiction, Chinese mythology coming together in a graphic novel of family, honor, and righting wrongs. This is a diesel punk novel that is if Avatar the Last Airbender, a wagon train of immigrant settlers, and Komodo dragons got together for a story. If you want adventure, humor, magic, and family in one spot, you probably want to read this. Ethan Young made a straightforward story: a family/clan is traveling back to their ancestral land. The action […]

There is a curse. They say: May you live in interesting times.

Interesting Times by Terry Pratchett

July 18, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader 1 Comment

Bingo 3: Gateway I initially got into Terry Pratchett because of the interesting and wacky cover illustrations of the original British paperbacks done by Josh Kirby. I remember picking one up a few times in a used bookshop before actually purchasing it. The interesting thing about the Discworld series is that it contains several character focused threads: Death, the witches, the wizards, the Watch, and assorted. This is one of the first series’ that I can remember starting and then chasing down all past and […]
