You’re a wizard, Peter. Well, an apprentice, anyway…

February 19, 2015 by Malin 1 Comment

Peter Grant is a probationary officer with the London Metropolitan Police when he, one night takes a witness statement from an individual who just happens to be a ghost. Unusual as this is, it saves Peter from a life of tedium in the Case Progression Unit (basically doing other cops’ paperwork for them) and to the attention of Inspector Nightingale, who just happens to be a wizard. Peter becomes the first wizard’s apprentice in England for more than 50 years, but Harry Potter this is […]

A book that proposes a meaning of life

February 10, 2015 by alwaysanswerb Leave a Comment

The Farthest Shore is possibly the most complex book so far of the Earthsea cycle, and probably the most challenging. The first two books examined the search for the truth within oneself: Ged embraces his darkness, Tenar her light. Both had to forgive themselves and find their absolution while dark worldly powers sought to use their fears against them. For a change of pace, The Farthest Shore sees its protagonists more or less at peace with themselves, but the world around them is collapsing because […]

I really missed out, not reading this as a youth.

February 3, 2015 by alwaysanswerb 2 Comments

A wise person knows to expect thoughtful, imaginative, lyrical fantasy from Ursula K. Le Guin, and in A Wizard of Earthsea, she does not disappoint. Goodreads summary: “Ged, the greatest sorcerer in all Earthsea, was called Sparrowhawk in his reckless youth. Hungry for power and knowledge, Sparrowhawk tampered with long-held secrets and loosed a terrible shadow upon the world. This is the tale of his testing, how he mastered the mighty words of power, tamed an ancient dragon, and crossed death’s threshold to restore the […]

Wizard Harry Dresden in fine form in Death Masks

August 10, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Harry Dresden is a highly respected (if impoverished) wizard among the supernatural scene, and when a Vatican priest calls on him to help find the stolen Shroud of Turin, he is thrilled to take the job and the fee that goes with it. He is less thrilled to learn that horribly mutilated bodies and hit men are turning up in the investigation, and that Chicago crime-boss Marcone seems to be in the thick of it. At the same time, a top noble of the Red […]

Harry Dresden Hits it out of the Park Again

July 3, 2014 by anevilweasel 1 Comment

Nothing better than a Harry Dresden novel narrated by Jim Marsters. Well,  there are better things, but as audio books go, this is the top end. Love that man’s voice. And Dresden Files stories – well  – Jim Butcher just keeps hitting them out of the park. Ok so first things first : if you have never read a Harry Dresden book before, well this is probably not where you want to start. There are like…15 of them. Seriously …go get Storm Front. That’s the […]
