I liked this one a lot. I know, I know….Karl Ove Knausgard has my number, and I am not sure there’s anything he could write that I wouldn’t enjoy. The difference here, especially from Min Kamp books (which I have currently read the first three) is that this is a list of ruminative thoughts on everyday objects and concepts, bookended by letters to a daughter not yet born. There’s an added component knowing that Knausgard and his wife have divorced recently. Also, this one is different […]
Mediocrity at every turn. But maybe it’s just me?
It is with a heavy heart that I post a not stellar review of this book. This is the third book in a row from my local library book club that I did not really like. I would say I liked this one more than the other two, so there’s that? I was surprised to see a number of my friends give this one fours and fives. For my taste I would give it a three on average. I was optimistic at the beginning, and […]
The characters and story were fine. The editing? Not so much.
Now that Bunnybean is tearing her way through the Lunar Chronicles books, I figured I might as well try and finish up the last book (I don’t count the new book of “related short stories” that just came out), Winter. I wasn’t all that excited about reading it, to be honest. I loved Cinder and Scarlet, and really liked Cress. And then I read Fairest. And I despised it. It really almost ruined the entire series for me. It was so heavy-handed and annoying, I […]
You stumbled on the finish line there, Marissa
3.5 stars WARNING! This review WILL contain spoilers for earlier books in the series. Do NOT keep reading this review if you’re not caught up, having read all three previous books! There are also some minor spoilers for this book, but if you skip my list of dislikes, you’ll avoid them. Winter was one of the books I was most anticipating in the second half of 2015. Marissa Meyer’s retellings of Grimm fairy tales with a clever YA sci-fi dystopian twist just kept getting better […]
This book tried to do too much, and mostly failed at all of it. I’m very sadface about it.
So first of all, as a whole, I really love this series. I love the characters. I love the blending of sci-fi and fairy-tales. I love the epic, space-faring, international, futuristic scope of it. And I liked this book as well, but I didn’t love it. And as a book, and a series-ender, it was far from perfect. I’m really upset about not loving it, especially since each book since Cinder has been better than the last. I really thought Meyer had got her feet […]
