There are no exploding airships in this book. But it’s still fun, and MUCH better than the cover would suggest

Spoiler warning! This is book 2 in this series, and as such, this review will contain certain spoilers for the plot of book 1, Kiss of Steel. My review for this book also explains quite a lot about the setting and world-building for this series, so you may want to read/re-read that one first, to remind yourself of the world these books take place in . Or just, you know, read the first book. This review will still be here when you’re done.  William Carver […]

Vampires should always be this sexy

June 15, 2015 by Lizbth Leave a Comment

I went on holiday last week and prepared my kindle with a bunch of interesting new books, several of which have been recommended by fellow Cannonballers. The first one I read, though, was one I bought a while ago in a Humble ebook bundle: New Amsterdam, by Elizabeth Bear.   More of a collection of short stories than a novel per se, the book contains several mysteries which are investigated and solved by three connected people: the vampire Don Sebastien de Ulloa, the sorcerer Abigail […]

Holly Black Gives Stephenie Meyer The Bird

June 12, 2015 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I apologize in advance for those of you who are fond of sparkly vampires, but one of the biggest problems I had with the whole Twilight series was the sheer passivity of Bella and the fact that when she actually became a vampire, she wasn’t a monster struggling with blood thirst but simply a stronger, more sparkly version of herself. My favorite vampires (Angel, the heroine of Sunglasses After Dark whose name escapes me, Nick Knight, etc.) all struggled with the weight of the killing […]

Just talk to each other, already!

April 16, 2015 by Malin Leave a Comment

This novella is part of Bec McMaster’s London Steampunk series. Some of the back story and world building for the story can be found in my review for Kiss of Steel, the first book in the series. When former factory worker turned East End enforcer John “Rip” Doolan was nearly killed by a vampire attack, the only way to save his life was for his employer Blade to infect him with the craving virus (a sort of vampire light option). After six months, he is still […]

Fu*k the What Now? A Paranormal Romance

April 15, 2015 by Mrs. Julien 20 Comments

Thanks to Katie and Patty’s inspiring review and JR Ward, I miss Kresley Cole. All three of you should go stand in the corner and THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU DID! Paranormal romance is the portion of the genre with the most primal stories. There are strong tribal elements and the tropes tend towards traditional roles. Men are warriors, god-like iron-thewed lords capable of both shocking violence and macho tenderness. The women are fertility goddesses, sensual and beautiful, but with a core of steel. The mythological […]

None of the visions seemed particularly silvery to me, actually

March 14, 2015 by Malin 6 Comments

This is book three in The Others series, which is one of my absolute favourite paranormal fantasy series at the moment. While you are given enough information to start with this one, you’ll get the most enjoyment if you start at the beginning, with the excellent Written in Red. There will also be minor spoilers for the earlier books in the series here, so if you don’t like that sort of thing, skip the review until you’re caught up. In a world where humans are […]
