I was bored but I read them all anyway, so joke’s on me

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

Murder of Crows by Anne Bishop

Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop

Marked in Flesh by Anne Bishop

Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop

Anne Bishop’s The Others series is a little bit odd. There is a lot in the books that is cool, interesting, and different, but I also found parts of the books to be tedious and amateurish. Bishop is not some green writer, so I can only assume that it’s just her style… which makes me hesitant to seek out her other books. I finished out this series because I was sufficiently curious how it would end, but overall I felt that the books didn’t quite […]

Disappointing series ender.

Etched in Bone (The Others, #5) by Anne Bishop

This series is such a mixed bag. I loved the first book. I found the whole world enchanting. And as the series went on, despite some hang-ups, I fell for the characters and the way they all pulled together gradually. But in the end, each book is just full of diminishing returns. Also, this is the end of the series. At least, the end of the stories about Meg and Simon and the Lakeside Courtyard . . . but I am left pretty unsatisfied by […]

Did you know that wolves and vampires don’t like cottage cheese? It is neither cheesy nor tasty.

Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop

This was the fifth (and final?) book in the Others series, and I’m not sure how I feel about it. There were some nice developments — mostly about what it means to be a family, which I liked. But. But. But. Things that didn’t bother me in the previous books — constant repetition of non-important details and sexism, mostly — really, really, really bugged the hell out of me this time. This book had at least four separate discussions about cottage cheese. I nearly couldn’t […]

Five Books In And I’m Meh About This Series

Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop

March 27, 2017 by Julie Leave a Comment

I initially was pleased to read The Others series by Anne Bishop, particularly starting with Written In Red, the first book of the series. I’ve read some of her other fiction, the first few books of the Black Jewels series, which I would not recommend at all.  A few people told me, yeah those books are terrible, but the Others books are great. The Others takes place in a world that is sort of like our own, but there are elementals and powerful forces of […]

Not enough Simon and Meg. Or ponies.

Marked in Flesh (The Others, #4) by Anne Bishop

I will say that I timed this perfectly. Book five is coming out in a little over a month, and I’m all caught up. Honestly, I wish the last book was out right now, because the last fifty pages or so of this one made me intensely curious about how this series is going to end. Which is good news! Because throughout the first half of this one, I was going to three-star it and hope for the best for book five. What charmed me […]

Only two books left? Wow that went fast.

Vision in Silver (The Others, #3) by Anne Bishop

October 31, 2016 by narfna 2 Comments

Awww, I like this series. I spent almost my whole review of the second book in this series being baffled about why I had so many complaints about it, and yet still enjoyed it so much. I’m just going to embrace the cognitive dissonance. I’m in for this series. Vision in Silver is very much a transition book. Meg was the catalyst for a whole bunch of changes that were gradually creeping up on both the Other and human communities of Lakeside, and then began […]
