I Wasn’t Charmed

January 9, 2015 by Ale 2 Comments

I wanted to like this book, and there were moments of it that I enjoyed, but the sixty or so pages in between these precious paragraphs were enough for me to not recommend this book to any serious urban fantasy readers. The bones of a good story are there: a fairly congenial and funny protagonist, a supernatural world, a believable love interest, and a manageable cast of semi-interesting major characters.  Where this book failed to capture my attention was in the protagonist’s narration and the […]

A sexy rogue vampire runs the gangs of steampunk London

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Honoria Todd is on the run from vampire nobles in Bec McMaster’s Kiss of Steel. Her father was murdered while working on a vamp cure for the Echelon, the near-immortal royalty who injected themselves with the virus. She’s forced to flee with her sister and brother into the night promising her father never to let them have his notes. She lives under false name in the rookeries of Whitechapel. She lies to get a job working as linguist in the rich part of town to make […]

A small Texas town is crossroad of supernatural secrets

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Charlaine Harris as she tends to write humorous mystery tales with a big dollop of hot romance. I’ve read all of the Sookie Stackhouse, Harper Connelly and Lily Bard books. As the last few Sookie books sucked, I wasn’t super keen to return to her body of work. However, once I learned Manfred Bernardo from the Harper books was the protagonist, my interest shot up by 100 percent. Manfred moves to Midnight into a house owned by no other than the handsome […]

Into the supernatural mist of horrors

December 30, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

Harper Blaine isn’t a believer in the supernatural, but after a near death experience she starts to see some strange things. She is referred to a paranormal studies professor for answers. He suggests she may be a grey walker, a human who can see into the supernatural dimension he calls the Grey. He along with his lovely, Irish witch wife offer to help her control her newfound power. Besides seeing ghosts, she can see vampires true self and even fall into this grey dimension. However, it’s proving […]

Honeymoon Trouble

December 29, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I came across My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon in Strand Books. It’s always nice to pick up an anthology as they tend to be easy reads. As a big fan of The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher, his story “Heorot”about a kidnapped newlywed woman from an beer festival was enough reason to buy. His story brings back Miss Gard, a mysterious supernatural who consults for the kingpin of Chicago. I always liked her, so was fun to see them momentarily join forces and learn a tiny […]

A bratty vampire more concerned with about her shoe collection than being undead

December 19, 2014 by teresaelectro Leave a Comment

I like reading about vampires probably more than most, Twilight notwithstanding, but this series really tested my patience with its obnoxious protagonist Betsey. She is having the worst day at the start of this book. She loses her job, gets into a wreck and wakes up alive in the funeral home. The first thing she notices is that she’s wearing a tacky suit and bad shoes. Not at all like her closet of designer things. She doesn’t really freak out, but instead goes home as […]
