Twice (or More) in a Lifetime

Recursion by Blake Crouch

July 29, 2019 by jeverett15 Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo: Science! You ever read a book that feels just a little too much like a treatment for a film script? In Blake Crouch’s Recursion, the focus is almost entirely on its high-concept, easy to pitch plot. The characters are briefly sketched to the point where it’s easy to imagine almost any two actors playing the main roles in an adaptation. The writing is competent but unchallenging, making for a quick read without much in the way of metaphor. Maybe that’s too critical. After all, […]

A meandering but mostly fun ride

The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O. by Neal Stephenson and Nicole Galland

July 6, 2019 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

This massive book covers time travel, witchcraft, academia, military machinations, and more science and physics than this English major could comfortably follow. It feels like several different books mashed together (maybe because of the dual authors?), but the merging of all the pieces was pretty successful. I haven’t read much Stephenson, so I’m not sure how much was him and how much was Galland, but I enjoyed most of it. Melisande Stokes is trapped in 1851 London, and is writing down everything that happened to […]

Very skeptical going in to this, but I quite enjoyed myself. Thanks, Read Harder!

Orange: The Complete Collection, Vol. 1 by Ichigo Takano

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This wasn’t my first manga, but it was the first I enjoyed. I tried Sailor Moon years ago, and was super not into it. In hindsight, I may have been unfair to it, and being unfamiliar with the conventions of manga and anime probably contributed, but still. Not a fan. But I was into this right away! I probably wouldn’t have ever picked it up, despite several friends having read and enjoyed it, except for the Read Harder Challenge this year (thanks Read Harder, doing […]

The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.

The Jane Austen Project by Kathleen A Flynn

June 5, 2019 by scootsa1000 1 Comment

What if, in a future not long from now, time travel was a real, government sponsored thing? With a competitive selection process for its various missions – some successful, some not – would you be willing to risk your actual life, as well as the life as you know it, in order to participate? Strangely, in this future, in which almost all animals are extinct (something called the mysterious “die off”) and all food is created via 3D printing technology, officials are using this amazing […]

DOOOGS IN SPACE! (OK actually in 1925 & 1850 America)

Time Dogs: Balto and the Race Against Time by Helen Moss

Time Dogs: Seaman and the Great Northern Adventure by Helen Moss

May 28, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne, the Ranger in Time series by Kate Messner and Paw Patrol got together and created a younger version of themselves with dogs and a time traveling van, you would get The Time Dogs series. The first two Time Dogs by Helen Moss are a sweet mix of fact and fiction. Clever stories bring to life the history of famous dogs and their people. The first book, Balto and the Race Against Time has our doggie […]

Not great, but not awful

Saving Juliet by Suzanne Selfors

May 25, 2019 by crystalclear Leave a Comment

Mimi is a reluctant actress, forced into the profession by her mother to continue in her family legacy.  Mimi would rather go to med school, but her controlling mother will hear none of it. It doesn’t matter that Mimi has stage fright.  Her current torture is playing Juliet in her family’s theater. Troy is a self-centered teenage pop star whose agent has decided that taking on the role of Romeo will be good for ratings, despite the fact that he’s not very good at acting. […]
