Like a time traveling Bertie Wooster

To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis

February 22, 2021 by Ellesfena 4 Comments

Series: Oxford Time Travel. I read Book One (Doomsday Book) in 2010. What I remembered about this series prior to reading this book: A friend recommended Doomsday Book to me because of the Middle Ages setting and the references to bubonic plague (infectious diseases are my jam). What I chiefly remember about it now was that I couldn’t get into the story because I kept waiting for the buboes to show up (plague doesn’t come into the story until well over halfway through, as I […]

Magical History Tour V03: Hidden Oil by Fabrice Erre

February 22, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While only having read two of books in the Magical History Tour series, I am enjoying them. First, they seem to hit on subjects not always covered (though pyramids are a popular subject, I am assuming the Crusades, oil, and the Great Wall of China less so. But I am looking forward to The Plague edition) and second, they are good books to be introduced to the subject. They allow the reader to realize there is (unlike oil) more under the surface. However, Magical History […]

Okay, I’m cheating. The second image belongs to book one. I just like it!

The Time Museum V02 by Matthew Loux

December 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read books one and two of The Time Museum graphic novel series several months apart. This made a few bumps in who was who; I had forgotten a character and a few character points/personalities and some of the adventures previously had. Therefore, it is best to read the series by Matthew Loux back to back. We continue the adventures of the Time Museum and our plucky time travelers with a new adventure that has some unusual twists and turns. Along with some new friends. […]

The master at some of his best work (Belated Bingo – White Whale)

11/22/63 by Stephen King

November 15, 2020 by cheerbrarian Leave a Comment

I’m a big fan of Stephen King. I’ve read many of the classics (Pet Sematary, The Shining, It, Misery, Salem’s Lot, Firestarter,  Needful Things) some of the zany ones (Christine and Rose Madder)  and I think my favorite, the most not-put-down-able for me, was The Stand. All that said I find him pretty uneven and sort of have to steel myself for his typical writing style. For folks that haven’t read any of his books, the way I describe it is that it is always […]

I am a rule breaker….And can be unlike Kiku and her family in this graphic novel

Displacement by Kiku Hughes

September 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr12bingo Book Club I am 100% cheating on this Bingo Block as I can’t find a Book Club book that I really want to read right now. However, this book should be 1000% in a book club.  We need to remember a piece of our own history and how history is currently repeating itself. Displacement by Kiku Hughes was not a perfect read for me. As much as I loved this book, I needed a bit more. It is a beautiful story about family, history, […]

“I was six years old. I was seven hundred and fifty. I was being hunted.”

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North

September 1, 2020 by narfna 14 Comments

I have in the past frequently compared books to food because I find it helpful. I love both books and food in the way that only comes from consuming something, putting it inside yourself and making it a part of you, quite literally. There’s the immediate pleasure of the consumption itself, and then there’s the afterward, when the food or the ideas do things to you (good, bad or in between; small or large scale). I have previously compared books to cotton candy and burritos […]
