Nettle & Bone

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

August 5, 2022 by Classic Leave a Comment

This is only the second offering I have read by T. Kingfisher. I was blown away by “What Moves the Dead” so wanted to read a longer work. Definitely happy that I did. I would only say the only thing that was an issue was how slow the first part of the book was when reading. It got much better. But we start in medias res and you are wondering what is happening as you find Marra trying to craft a dog made of bones. […]

What Moves the Dead

“There aren’t any moors. There’s a sort of heath and a tarn and a mad Englishwoman painting mushrooms.”

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

The last T. Kingfisher book I read (The Hollow Places) made me terrified of willow trees and school buses, and now this one made me terrified of rabbits (technically hares, but, ya know). Which is to say, this is another astoundingly imaginative work. While it’s certainly not necessary, I’d recommend reading Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” before this as it’s based on that short story. It gives you a great appreciation for how the author changed (I’d say improved) the story. As […]

What Moves the Dead

What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher

May 31, 2022 by Classic 6 Comments

Please note that I received this book via NetGalley. This did not affect my rating or review. Wow. This was so good. It could have been 100 pages longer and I wouldn’t have noticed. This was a great twist on “The Fall of the House of Usher” and I loved every second of it. “What Moves the Dead” follows Alex Easton that is a retired soldier that is rushing to see their childhood friend, Madeline Usher. Alex served with Madeline’s brother Roderick and finds both […]

Cute fantasy romances that avoid being saccharine

Paladin's Grace by T. Kingfisher

Paladin's Strength by T. Kingfisher

May 6, 2022 by Aquillia 5 Comments

For the last year, my favourite books list has included a mixture of “cozy” and “weird”. It’s hard to get me in the mood for something too traditional; I’m enjoying books with romantic elements but get frustrated by lack of non-relationship plot; and I think nothing will ever live quite up to my euphoric feelings of “wtf” with Harrow the Ninth. A friend recommended Paladin’s Grace to me and I am so grateful for that! I devoured it and the sequel, Paladin’s  and am disappointed Scribd and […]

This is the most fun I’ve had reading a scary book, like ever!

The Hollow Places by T. Kingfisher

March 28, 2022 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

I selected this book to read because it sounded weird and scary and interesting.  I had no idea funny was on the menu too!  It did not disappoint. Kara kinda starts out as a sad sack that you root for.  She just got divorced, and rather than moving back in with her BANANAS and pain in the butt mother, she moves into her uncle’s spare room.  It’s a spare room in his museum of oddities – Uncle Earl’s Museum of Wonders.  The first (nearly) half of […]

A teenage wizard girl and her somewhat sentient cookie and sourdough do big stuff

A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

February 27, 2022 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I was a little late to the A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking, but I’m glad I finally got it; this one is both fun and a little inventive. The basic story is plucky heroine with limited resources faces off against unknown and then known end-of-the-world kind of badness, and triumphs with the help of some friends. Said heroine is 14-year-old Mona, who lives as a magic user in a world mostly suspicious of magic. Mona’s magic only works on baked goods, which is just […]
