Prison for Profit

American Prison: A Reporter's Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishment by Shane Bauer

April 26, 2026 by esmemoria Leave a Comment

They convince themselves, with remarkable ease, that they are in the business of punishment, because it makes the world better, not because it makes them rich.” In 2014, Mother Jones reporter Shane Bauer went undercover as a guard at Winn Correctional Center in Winnfield, Louisiana. Winn Correctional was a for-profit prison run by Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), later renamed to the deceptively publicly responsible CoreCivic. American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishment delves into the history of prisons-for-profit and Bauer’s […]

Let’s Just Abolish the Prison System

American Prison by Shane Bauer

February 12, 2020 by Pheagan Leave a Comment

I’m combining Cannonball Read with another reading challenge, and have decided on this book as my true crime read. I want to address the fact that I chose this as my true crime pick. While technically it is a true book about criminals, it’s not what we think about when we think of true crime. I am familiar with true crime: I used to watch Most Wanted, I’ve seen many serial killer documentaries, and I regularly listen to My Favorite Murder. True crime tends to […]

I’m horrible

American Prison: A Reporter's Undercover Journey into the Business of Punishment by Shane Bauer

The Institute by Stephen King

Mountain Man by Keith C. Blackmore

In Distant Lands: A Short History of the Crusades by Lars Brownworth

I’ve been bad the last couple months. I finished all these books by early October, and have probably started a dozen books since then without finishing anything. And I’ve been reading Brandon Sanderson’s Misborn for about three months. I’m liking it, but I just can’t finish it for whatever reason. This hasn’t been a good Cannonball for me. But, much like my first Cannonball in 2015, I have the birth of a child to blame. Anyway, I’ll still try and review these books the best […]

It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails.

American Prison by Shane Bauer

Like many of the books I read this year, I found American Prison: A Reporter’s Undercover Journey Into the Business of Punishment by Shane Bauer on NPR’s Best Books of 2018 list. I love NPR’s list. There are so many books and genres to choose from, and most of them have been very interesting and readable. I’m eagerly awaiting their 2019 list, but I haven’t seen it yet. I really hope they haven’t discontinued it. In addition, American Prison was one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2018. Shane Bauer is […]
