I like books but not this one, but maybe you will

How NOT to Make a Jelly Sandwich by Ross Burach

October 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In my role as a bookseller, behind the scenes operator and an aunt I find many different types of books with varying degrees of likable success. One of those books I found recently was an online reader called How NOT to Make a Jelly Sandwich by Ross Burach who is doing double duty as author and illustrator.  The book’s result became one that was not different in the sense the idea was different (a girl makes a sandwich in a creative way as we have […]

The fact I don’t always like a book is why I love books: something for us all

Vampire Jam Sandwich by Casey Lyall and Nici Gregory

June 13, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I am sorry Casey Lyall and Nici Gregory but your story, Vampire Jam Sandwich (which I read via an online reader copy and is due July 2025) did not hit the spot for me. Now I appreciate the ingredients you put into the illustrations, such as the red colors, the pointy teeth sandwich runny and running around (even if it is a bit messy and I am feeling the sticky getting all over) and the flapping capes that hide the surprise ending. Which was written […]

Sandwiches of the Past to try in the Future

Sandwiches of History the Cookbook by Barry W. Enderwick

January 5, 2025 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I recently was on a long road trip to visit family for the holidays from the SouthEast to MidWest. That means a lot of radio time, which means, NPR, Christian pop, or country. I have an extremely limited tolerance for the latter two, so there was a lot of NPR. On NPR I heard an end of year book review sequence, and I had to look up one of the books. It turns out there is a podcast now cookbook on food history that I’d […]

My modern Italian feast experiment

March 12, 2017 by teresaelectro 4 Comments

After a year back in town, I finally sorted out my LAPL library card privileges. Much to my surprise, the Highland Park branch has a very extensive cookbook selection. I LOVE Italian food and culture, even minored in Italian at USC. As such, I immediately snagged the Giada’s Kitchen: New Italian Favorites off the shelf. I was never a big fan of her Food Network cooking show, but I do own a very nice skillet from her Target line. 🙂 The book is organized into the following sections: appetizers […]
