The end ruined it for me

The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs by Katherine Howe

March 21, 2021 by Ellesfena 2 Comments

Series: The Physick Book. I read Book One (The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane) in 2009. What I remembered about this series prior to reading this book: I had gotten this series completely mixed up with the Deborah Harkness series, which was rather unfair to these books. While I didn’t love this, it’s certainly better than the All Souls trilogy. Because I had it mixed up with another series, it turned out I didn’t actually remember anything about the first book when I picked this […]

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble

February 8, 2021 by Jake 1 Comment

A Simple Favor is one of my favorite movies from the last few years. I love quirky crime comedies and the leads have great chemistry. But I also enjoyed how it depicted female relationships, especially in an unconventional manner. A Simple Pod, hosted by three journalists who also love the movie, unpacks this a little, talking about the queerness of the movie and the de-centering of men in its tale. We Ride Upon Sticks isn’t a crime story but it still hits a similar sweet spot for me. […]

What even happened here?

The Witches: Salem, 1692 by Stacy Schiff

April 21, 2016 by narfna 4 Comments

Here are three things I know: 1. The Puritans were weirdos. Everything with them was witches. Everything. My notes are missing. IT WAS A WITCH. My daughter is moody. SHE’S A WITCH. My dog barfed on my rug. WIIIITCH!!!!! 2. The airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow (European) is roughly 24 miles per hour. 3. I did not like this book. I really don’t want to spend much time talking about this book because, a) I started (and finally finished) it so long ago that […]
