Don’t you know there’s a war on?

Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

by 4 Comments

This book very much suffers from middle book syndrome. This is supposed to be a five book series but I’m not sure Yarros has enough story for it, so this is a lot of filler. One issue is that Yarros isn’t necessarily a good enough author to write entertaining filler. Fourth Wing was incredibly derivative of so many other fantasy novels and tropes but it was also action packed, with fun characters, and there was fun world building. It was just a highly readable page turner. […]

You can have magical power or love, not both.

The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk

The Midnight Bargain is a magic-fueled fantasy romance exploring what it means for a woman to conform to societal norms. Beatrice and her family have traveled far to a capital city in search of a husband. Her father has left the finances in a tight spot, which puts intense pressure on her to marry. But Beatrice would much rather become a sorceress and forget this whole marriage thing. But that’s against this society’s rules where women are given a painful binding collar on their wedding […]

The Light, The Dark, and The Dragon

Consort of Fire by Kit Rocha

Consort of Fire was an insta-buy because I love the author duo Kit Rocha to pieces! Their new duology kicks off with Sachielle on her way to become the said consort of a mysterious dragon lord. He is a powerful man named Ash who can literally become a dragon. This immortal dude is pretty scary, but Sachi isn’t afraid. She has been dreaming of fire and determined to seduce him… The twist is she is on a lifelong path to assassinate him lest she will […]

Better than Book 1

A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J Maas

(Since this is a sequel, there will be spoilers for the end of Book 1 in here) My review of the first book was titled “Better Than Fourth Wing,” and this one was miles better than Book 1, so I guess maybe I actually liked this one? So Feyre has conquered Amarantha, rescued Tamlin and the rest of the Fae, and is now back in the Spring Court trying to reconcile all of this good news with the very, very bad things she had to […]

More Pirates than Tea or Tomes

A Pirate's Life for Tea by Rebecca Thorne

by Leave a Comment

Teas and Tomes is officially a series. I saw the sequel to Can’t Spell Treason Without Tea, A Pirate’s Life for Tea at the airport, and it’s a decent light travel/beach/need a mental break read. There’s two plot threads: first, Reyna and Kianthe have to find the dragon eggs they promised to find in the first book, and second (during that investigation) they get involved in local politics by agreeing to capture a river pirate who has been annoying the local diarn Arlon. Naturally, things […]

Better than Fourth Wing

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J Maas

by 4 Comments

The story: I think this has been reviewed here a million times, but here goes: Feyre kills a wolf who’s actually a faerie in disguise, and another faerie prince type guy named Tamlin comes calling to collect his revenge. He takes her back to Faerie and then just kind of leaves her alone in his giant castle. Eventually they fall in love (I guess? I am skeptical), she learns more about what’s really happening in Faerie, and decides she has to try to save Tamlin […]
