California fairy tale dreamin’

The Rose and the Beast by Francesca Lia Block

January 6, 2026 by cosbrarian 1 Comment

The Rose and the Beast by Francesca Lia Block is an early 2000s reimagining of classic fairy tales set in “modern” Los Angeles. Block adapts nine of our most famous European fairy tales, each from the perspective of the young woman at its center. Some are narrated first-person and immediate, some are told in a more fable-esque tone. Each title is just a single word, and while some titles clearly indicate the tale they’re retelling, a couple are vague, which was fun to figure out […]

Connecting a community one sock at a time

Magnolia Wu Unfolds it All by Chanel Miller

May 15, 2025 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Magnolia Wu is almost ten. She spends a lot of time at her parent’s establishment, the Bing Qi Ling Bubbles Laundromat. Her loneliness leads to lots of creative thinking: on one wall is her bulletin board of lost socks, lone socks left behind by customers. While new friend and California transplant Iris is visiting, a customer xenophobically Karens out on Magnolia’s mom, and Magnolia nearly throws out her sock wall in a fit of anger. But Iris proposes they start the NYC Sock Detective project, […]

New Cool Book Alert: The Thorn Key

The Thorn Key by Jeana Jorgensen

March 6, 2025 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

The very cool Jeana Jorgensen – folklorist, professor, dancer, and sex educator – has published a gorgeous collection of her fairy tale themed poetry in her new book The Thorn Key! I love Jeana’s academic work. Her books Fairy Tales 101 and Folklore 101 are amazing introductions to both studies, teaching its readers a TON in a way that is fun and conversational. I should have reviewed those here LOL! If you have been interested in learning more about the history and study of fairy […]

Do Fly – How to Take Off Creatively

Do Fly by Gavin Strange

January 22, 2024 by Tereasa Leave a Comment

I first encountered the joy that is Gavin Strange during Adobe Max in 2021. I was inspired by Gavin’s talk – he spoke on how he created his success and was hired for his job at Aardman Animations as a designer and director. (Gavin also has his non-Aardman work at JamFactory.) What I found inspiring about Gavin is much of his knowledge of creative creation is self-taught. He urges us to not deny our urges to learn and discover. “The more you open yourself up […]

Literary Hub Made Me Do It

Hôtel Splendid by Marie Redonnet

Rose Mellie Rose by Marie Redonnet

Forever Valley by Marie Redonnet

April 6, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos 4 Comments

It is VERY hard for me to turn away from a listicle. I love a list; from making them myself to seeking them out, lists give me order AND fun- the best of both worlds! The fine folks over at Literary Hub are keen on list-making, and having enjoyed things they have recommended before (hello, The Lover!) I was pleased as punch to track down this loose “trilogy” from Marie Redonnet after spotting it in a list of short reads. I, and Redonnet (and translator […]

Beware of Bored Women!

Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District by Nikolai Leskov

January 18, 2022 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

ESPECIALLY if you are the one to damn them into a life of boredom. I sought out this short story after being utterly enthralled by the 2016 Florence Pugh tour-de-force Lady Macbeth. If you are a sucker for a brutal period drama chock full of female desperation-disguised-as-power, then hustle your bustle to your  nearest ye olde video rental and check. it. out. The film is phenomenal, and I was immediately curious about the source material! A little Wikipedia creeping led me to Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk […]
