Playing for keeps

Trigger by N. Griffin

May 27, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Trigger is a disturbing look at child abuse and the toxicity of one family, and how the one person who is supposed to help you can be the one person who you fear the most. The life of our narrator is set up so that when an answer is given, three more questions occur. And yes, there are literally trigger warnings due to the language, violence, and implications some scenes present.  And the scary part is some of what N. Griffin writes about is pulled […]

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage

August 27, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Baby Teeth by Zoje Stage book is a highly recommended book. It is on lists of great thrillers. Banned books to read. And even for book groups. However, I am not totally a hundred percent sure why. I learned after starting it, several people had a variety of “not liking” comments. One person could not finish it. Others felt that while it was worth the read, but felt a few other titles were stronger. This mixed batch of love and eh was what I felt. […]

Even better on re-read.

Broken Harbor (Dublin Murder Squad, #4) by Tana French

July 6, 2020 by narfna 2 Comments

This is one of my favorites from this series, and I’m kicking myself for not writing this review immediately upon finishing it for the second time, because I got something different out of it this time than I did on my first read. But I don’t remember what that was! The only notes I left myself consisted of the temporary review I left over on Goodreads, which read, “This one whomped me good.” So helpful. Maybe it was something about Scorcher and his black and […]

Triple Cannonballing with Tana French

December 28, 2016 by narfna 23 Comments

It’s almost ridiculous how easy she makes it look, writing a book this good. I don’t even know what to say anymore about her books. They are all just so, so good. And the way she jumps from character to character each book gives her room to play around with different structures and themes, and yet still stay within the framework of a murder mystery novel. I love murder mystery novels, but I don’t love these books because of the mysteries (although I don’t think […]

The woods are just trees, the trees are just wood.

February 27, 2015 by narfna 8 Comments

This book probably deserves five stars, but for entirely personal reasons, it was very uncomfortable for me to read the last half, and I can’t give a book five stars that my mind bends away from so strongly. It’s like when you try to push two magnets together and all they do is repel each other. They’re so similar they can’t be in close proximity with each other. My hate is so strong for this character’s actions because I understand him completely, intimately. It’s horrible that […]
