Nimona – 5/5 Stars I really do love this book a lot. It’s so full of charm and joy and fun. It FEELS whimsical at times, and I generally do like whimsy, but it’s a much more tightly controlled and structured narrative than whimsy would suggest. I have owned three copies of this book and have had three copies get “borrowed” by students and never returned. I feel like everyone knows what the book is, but a quick recap. We are in a far-off magical […]

One song away from being a super hero

Black Canary: Ignite by Meg Cabot

November 11, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The story of the new Black Canary unfolds in Black Canary: Ignite. But first our heroine needs to survive Junior High school. But fighting her mother’s old nemesis might be easier than taking on the principal, Dr. Vogel. Meg Cabot’s voice comes alive in a new DC novel for the younger reader. Thirteen-year-old Dinah Lance is just trying to get through tests, friendship worries, cheerleading tryouts, convincing her father to let her join the GCPD Junior Police Academy (so she can become a police officer […]

DC for the Raina Telgemeier crowd

Black Canary: Ignite by Cabot, Meg

June 15, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

Black Canary is one of my favorite superheroes, but some might call me a casual fan because really it’s Brandon Fletcher/Annie Wu’s version of Dinah that is my favorite – an undercover punk rock singer fighting aliens and protecting her band. I haven’t read much else besides that version cuz I just like rereading it, ha! So this was the first sort of traditional “origin story” I read for Dinah, and Meg Cabot definitely sticks to the classic tale – daughter of a detective and […]

In a shocking turn of events, the book was NOT better!

August 6, 2018 by crystalclear 4 Comments

I love the movie The Princess Diaries.  And the sequel.  (And they’re both on Netflix right now!)  And the books that the movies were based on were not really on my radar.  But then someone wrote a Buzzfeed article about the differences between the books and the movies, and CBR10 Bingo had a square about books that have been adapted into movies, so I decided to give the book a shot.  And I’m sad to say, in a reversal of what usually happens, that I like […]

She’s a princess, who writes a diary

May 1, 2014 by Malin 4 Comments

Mia Thermopolis hates being one of the tallest freshmen in school, and she’s flunking algebra. The dreamiest boy in school is dating the evil witch that constantly makes Mia’s life difficult, and now she has to deal with the fact that her algebra teacher asked her mother out. And her mother accepted! Her mother gives her a diary into which she can write down her thoughts and feelings, and after some misgivings, Mia starts doing just that. To begin with, her worries are just the […]

I felt the same way. Interesting concept, but the execution was lacking.
