Somewhat Marvelous

August 18, 2017 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

It’s a little weird reading comics after so many years. I used to be an avid collector and dreamt of being an artist one day, until I figured out that I could get more entertainment for less money by reading novels. So I haven’t really read many comics in about 20 years. But I do miss the art. The art here by Adrian Alphona and David Lopez is pretty great, though very different, stylistically. Alphona is looser, less compact, which is actually perfect for the […]

Nice Meeting All of You. Enjoy the Rest of Your Cruise.

Hi. You should read Chelsea Cain’s run of Mockingbird. I Can Explain and My Feminist Agenda are FANTASTIC! Really! What can I say that will get you to read these two volumes? Chelsea Cain is not a comic book writer. She was hired to write an eight issue run for Mockingbird, aka Barbara “Bobbi” Morse. It’s a remarkable run, and I am so very sad that it isn’t going to be a multi-year, eight volume run. As it stands, Cain’s eight issue run really should […]

Not in the Cards, Mon Ami.

July 30, 2017 by Halbs Leave a Comment

A few years ago the pop culture and sports website Grantland (RIP) posted a highly controversial article about why Gambit sucks. There were a lot of solid points made in that article: why would a thief wear a fuschia outfit, why wasn’t he ever developed more than having cool-guy ticks (answer: Chris Claremont left X-Men before he fully fleshed out Gambit), etc. I fell into the other camp – of course Gambit is cool hero. He has a cool outfit (that makes no sense, admittedly), he […]

Superhero Renaissance Faire

July 11, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Someone at Marvel overindulged in mead and thought what if the whole Marvel Universe were set in Elizabethan times and what if we got Neil Gaiman to write it? Wouldn’t that be great? Oh fine, that’s not what happened. The whole idea came to Gaiman while he was wandering around Venice. It’s an interesting curiosity with some good stuff and at least one hugely problematic thing. It is 1602. Queen Elizabeth is near the end of her reign, the Inquisition is active in Spain, James […]

Oh, $#@! – Translated From Skrull

July 10, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

While perusing the free Deadpool volumes available to me, I decided to go ahead and try as many different Deadpool writers as possible. Here we have Daniel Way’s Deadpool, taking on a Skrull force, defeating them, and then defecting to their side in Secret Invasion. Deadpool reasons that he was created to be a killer of men, so why not kill men for the Skrull? Daniel Way’s Deadpool is crazy with a purpose, talks to himself intelligently, and that we see his P.O.V. (Pool-o-vision). I […]

Puzzle Box Structure Means You Can Read in Any Order

July 9, 2017 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Yes, I have been hoovering up graphic novels like mad while I have this trial membership. It’s been great. But move over Thor, Patsy, Jessica, and Red Sonja, I have a new fictional girl crush – Bobbi Morse, Mockingbird. She starts off looking like Battle Barbie, but she is a paragon of science, smarts, sarcasm, and kicking. She still looks like Battle Barbie at the end what with the long blond hair and blue eyes, but I’m ok with that. When Bobbi was little, she […]
